Cardinal track team competes in Laurel

LAUREL — The Randolph High School girls and boys track and field teams finished fifth and eighth at last week’s Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears Invitational.

The Lady Cards finished with 42 points while their boy counterparts were able to bring home two points.

“The girls had their best day on the track/field all year,” girls head coach Ted Stubbs said of the seasonhigh point output. “We again scored a season high and it was another cold blustery day at Laurel. Temps were in the low 50s with winds of 30 and cloudy.

“The girls all competed well with some new season bests and personal bests.”

Nicole Haselhorst led the Randolph attack with 14 points as she finished second in the 100 hurdles with a personal season best of (19.9) and third in the 300 hurdles.

Bailey Beal got second place in the high jump and sixth in the 200 meters, Ella Scott was in sixth place in the 400 meters while she teamed with Beal, Erin Engel and Emilee Olson for a third-place run in the 4x100 relay. The quartet ran a season-best 56.9.

Engel got third place in the shot put with a 29-1.5 and Jacey Bartels ended up in fifth place in the discus (91.2).

Stella Askey placed fourth in the high jump-Erin threw the shot a p.r. of 29-1.5 for third, and Jacey tossed the discus 91-2 for fifth

“All of the girls who competed did great just to get their events in on a day that was really not conducive to track/field,” Stubbs said.

Randolph boys head coach Eric Brown has seen his group continue to improve throughout the season.

“They just have to remain confident in their abilities,” Brown said. “Hopefully the weather cooperates with a little better as well.”

Justin Guenther placed sixth in the 2-mile run to help score the Cardinals points and earn the team’s first individual score of the season.

The 4x100 relay team also finished sixth to earn the other point as Gage Jensen, Gavin Wortman, Gabe Wortman and Joe Miller recorded a 55.40 time.

The team headed to Creighton Tuesday and will compete in the Northeast Classic Thursday which helps for qualifying to the postseason.

“Next week we have the Norfolk Classic on Thursday and hopefully we can send someone there, and then the Conference meet on Saturday in Winnebago,” Brown said. “It will be a busy week and I am hoping for a productive week. It will be nice for these kids to get to compete multiple times this week.”
