Beal earns a pair of medals at Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK — The Randolph Cardinals track and field team continues to see improvement from the girls side while the boys continue to seek a breakthrough.

At the Battle Creek track meet last week, with the boys unable to get points in the standings while the girls scored nine points to finish ninth out of 12 teams.

“We really competed well against some very high-quality talented teams,” Randolph coach Ted Stubbs said. “Bailey Beal scored in the high jump and long jump and Ella Scott placed in the 400 with a personal best time of (1:10.84). “We just try as hard as we can and do what we can to get better.”

Scott’s finish in the 400 was good enough for fifth place and a medal, despite Scott’s first foray into the event.

She’s managing her improvement on the track while also competing in club volleyball as well.

“There were 30 girls in the 400,” Scott said. “I have been doing every single event except the long distance, so I was trying to find one that is right for me. Last year, I did the 300 hurdles, so it wasn’t terrible, I guess. I am glad I am not doing hurdles this year.

“I am trying high jump, but I don’t know how long I will stick with that. (Running the 400), I wasn’t too worried. It was a rough day to try it because the wind was so bad. I just knew it was partly a mental thing and you have to keep going, I guess. Part of me was like, “Now, I have to run this every meet.’ But I was glad to find something that I might be able to place in.”

Beal finished in a tie for second place in the high jump (4-10) and fifth in the long jump (15-02),

Other performances for the Lady Cardinals included Stella Askey (14th in the 800), Erin Engel (13th in the shot put), Jacey Bartels (13th in the discus) and the 4x100 relay team (Scott, Beal, Emilee Olson and Engel) finished sixth.

“I am really proud of Jacey in her discus throwing, because she’s been working hard with that,” Scott said. “The Battle Creek Invite is hard to place at because there are so many hard teams. Getting away with two medals from there is good.”
