Girls will work on better starts

WYNOT - On Friday, the Hawks traveled to take on the D2 No. 6 team in the state, the Wynot Blue Devils. The Blue Devils came out to a fast start and were leading 22-3 after the first quarter. Osmond-Randolph would finally settle into the game during the second period and were able to play really well with Wynot throughout the rest of the game.

Even with Wynot adding 15 in the second quarter to take a 37-8 lead into halftime, Osmond-Randolph kept attacking. The Hawks outscored the Blue Devils in the second half 14-13 but it wasn’t enough as they would drop their second game to a state ranked team by a final of 50-22. Erin Engel played a great game for the Hawks as she led the team with six points, nine rebounds, and five steals.

“We need to find a way to have better starts to games as now that’s two games in a row of giving up 22 points in the first quarter and having to climb our way out of that hole to finish the game,” said Coach Bradley Wright. “We were able to hold a very dangerous Wynot team to only 50 points, and only 28 points in the final three quarters. Every statistical category besides shooting percentage and turnovers, we were either right even with Wynot or very close. Shooting and turnovers will improve as players get more confident in themselves and in the schemes we’re trying to run throughout the season. We can be a very good team right now, but we need to come out with better starts to games.”

The first time they matched up, Wynot was able to come away with a 38-12 victory. Osmond-Randolph already has shown a lot of growth as they were able to close the gap to a 10-29 final score this time around. “Some JV players are playing really well right now and will be challenging for a spot on varsity in upcoming games,” Wright said.

Juliana Kumm would lead the Hawks in scoring with three points, Kaleigh Miller grabbed a team high six rebounds, and Piper Hoffman was very active defensively as she led the team with three steals.

The JV squad will be back in action Thursday against Bloomfield in Osmond starting at 4 p.m.
