Both Hawk teams drop games against Creighton

Turnovers plague boys in second half

CREIGHTON — The Osmond-Randolph Hawks lost to the Creighton Bulldogs 54-27 on the road Dec. 13 in Lewis and Clark Conference boys basketball.

The Bulldogs featured a hot offense coming into the game, averaging 61 points per game, and were led by 2020-21’s all-class leading scorer, John Mitchell.

The Hawks executed a diamond and 1 defense extremely well, and held Creighton to just 26 points through the first three quarters, only two of them coming from Mitchell. The score was tied at nine after the first quarter, and the Hawks took an 18-15 deficit into the halftime locker room.

Creighton led 26-19 after three quarters and then cracked the game open and won 54-27. Osmond-Randolph struggled to score against Creighton’s man-to-man defense, and turned the ball over 21 times, which ultimately led to Creighton pulling away for the win.

Trevin Larson was efficient on offense, scoring 13 points on 6/11 shooting from the field. Owen Severson came next, scoring six points while also pulling down eight rebounds.

Brayden Shearer, Jake Harder, Luke Harder and Matthew Alderson all chipped in two points on what was a tough night offensively for the Hawks.

Brayden Shearer had a big game from the bottom of the diamond and 1, ensuring Creighton got no second chances by pulling down a gamehigh 11 rebounds.

Osmond-Randolph rebounded well as a team, pulling down a team total of 35 rebounds and only surrendering six offensive boards to the Bulldogs.

The Hawks’ first home game was once again postponed because of weather, and the game in Osmond versus Bloomfield will be made up at a later date.

Osmond-Randolph (0-3) was looking for its first win on Dec. 19, when it was scheduled to take on Ponca at home in Randolph.

On Dec. 22, the Hawks will tangle with Elkhorn Valley in another home game in Randolph.

Girls hang tight until defense change

CREIGHTON — The Osmond-Randolph Lady Hawks traveled to Creighton on Dec. 13 and lost 32-28 in varsity basketball action.

In a slow first quarter, Creighton took a 9-5 advantage after one.

The Lady Hawks were getting good looks and got to the charity stripe early and often.

But a cold 2/11 effort from the free-throw line in the first half made it harder to get points.

The second quarter saw both teams trading baskets as they each added 8 points and the Lady Bulldogs took a 17-13 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw the Lady Hawks come out strong as they were able to finally get some shots to fall and played great defense, holding Creighton to only four third-quarter points while adding 11 of their own and taking a 24-21 lead going into the fourth quarter.

During the final quarter, the Lady Bulldogs switched to a zone defense and the Lady Hawks’ offense struggled to get into a rhythm offensively.

In the closing minutes, Creighton was able to cut the lead and tie it up late.

A basket and a couple of free throws sealed the win for the Lady Bulldogs 32-28.
