Verle Kathryn Augustine

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Verle Kathryn (Bumann) Augustine, 75, died Jan. 7, 2024, at Clarkson Health Care, Rapid City, S.D.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at Peace Lutheran Church, Rapid City, S.D. Burial followed at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Rapid City, S.D.

Verle was born Feb. 23, 1948, in Norfolk to Chester and Phyllis (Krohn) Bumann. Verle graduated from Wausa High School in Wausa and then attended the Reece & Sybil School of Beauty and obtained a degree in cosmetology.

Verle worked in the income tax department at the Lincoln Capitol Building in Lincoln until she decided to move to Rapid City, S.D., with a friend.

Verle worked at the Walk In Beauty Shop until she married Calvin Augustine. Calvin and Verle were married in Wausa Nov. 29, 1969. After they were married, the couple moved to Dickinson, N.D., for three months, then returned to and stayed Verle Augustine

in Rapid City, S.D.

Verle went back to cosmetology and continued this career until 1983. Once her children were older, Verle went to work for the hospital in the cafeteria. She worked there until 2000. The last job that Verle worked, and ultimately retired from, was as a bus monitor for Rapid City Public Schools; Verle worked on the handicapped bus and found years of joy with this job.

Verle was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Rapid City, S.D. The preschool was a big part of Verle’s life; she enjoyed helping there and playing the piano for the kids.

Verle was a good Christian; she started the prayer chain at Peace Lutheran, was active in Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and helped in organizing and starting the church quilting group.

Verle loved working with children; she and her husband welcomed and cared for a total of 21 foster children during their active fostering years. The couple also welcomed their own children into their home through adoption.

Verle loved to quilt in her free time. She often attended quilting conventions like Quilt Nebraska with her sisters and friends.

Verle is survived by her husband, Calvin Augustine; daughters, Tracy Augustine, Rapid City, S.D., and Christina Augustine-Huggans, Paxton; granddaughter, Alexis Augustine, Lincoln; grandson, Aayden Huggans, Paxton; siblings, Rick and Sharlyn Fritz, Houston, Texas; Larry and Myla Giesmann, Sterling; and Rich Maxwell, Rapid City, S.D.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Phyllis Bumann, and her sister, Rogene Maxwell.

Memorials are to be directed to Kirk Funeral Home, Rapid City, S.D., and will be split between Main Street Living and Black Hills Works.
