LAUREL — Verdel Erwin, 91, Concord, died Jan. 4, 2018, at Providence Medical Center, Wayne.

Visitation was Tuesday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Concord.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Jan. 10, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Concord, with Rev. Christine Hjelmstad officiating.

Active pallbearers will be Rod Erwin, Rich Erwin, Blake Erwin, Heath Erwin, Wyatt Erwin and Warren Hansen.

Honorary pallbearers will be Verdel’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren and neighbors, Mark Olson, John Taylor, Jim Nelson, Marlin “Freck” Johnson, Mike Johnson and Ernie Swanson.

Interment will be in Concord Cemetery, Concord.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hasemann Funeral Home, Laurel.

Verdel Thomas Erwin was born Feb. 20, 1926, on the home place north of Concord, to Thomas and Gertrude (Nelson) Erwin. He was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church, Concord. He served in the United States Army for two years, during World War II, serving in the Philippines and Japan. He was Staff Sergeant and Quarter Master for TRK Company. Verdel married Alice Pearson Feb. 25, 1950, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, near Concord. The couple farmed south of Concord for many years before moving into town. Verdel was a life-time member of Concordia Lutheran Church, served on the Church Council Board, and sang in the choir many years. Verdel served on the State Brotherhood Committee several years, the Concord Township Clerk for 50 years, and on the Dixon County Fair Board for more than 25 years. He felt very blessed to watch his three sons and six grandchildren play sports throughout high school and college. His happiest moments were with family during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Verdel is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Janice Erwin, Lincoln; June Erwin, Dixon; and Brad Erwin, Concord; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Verdel was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice in 2010; son, Tom in 2014; siblings, Irene (Glenn) Magnuson and Anita (Waldo) Johnson and Quinten (Alice) Erwin.

Memorials may be designated to Concordia Lutheran Church.
