Robert Donald ‘Bob’ Dickes

WAHOO — Robert Donald “Bob” Dickes, 69, died Nov. 16, 2022, in Wahoo. Mass of Christian Burial was Nov. 21 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Davey, with the Rev. Christopher Goodwin as celebrant. Visitation and a Rosary were Nov. 21 all at the church. Interment was at St. Mary & St. Patrick Cemetery, Davey. Robert was born in Yankton, S.D., to Gerald and Myria “Mae” (Meyer) Dickes. He was raised on farms near Fordyce and Crofton, and attended schools at Beaver Creek, Menominee and Crofton. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, had basic training in Fort Lewis, Wash., and served in Vietnam. He returned to Fort Hood, Texas, where he was honorably discharged.

After the service, he worked for numerous farmers in the Yankton and Crofton areas and became an over-the-road truck driver. He eventually settled for a time in Omaha, where he completed his GED and received an associate’s degree from The Institute of Computer Science while working to support his family. His family moved to Lincoln, where he worked his remaining career with computers, both mainframe and PC, developing cutting-edge processes for the Nebraska Department of Labor. He taught classes at Southeast Community College on how to purchase personal PCs and helped trouble-shoot PC issues for many friends and businesses in and around Lincoln.

Robert loved to travel, and especially loved long driving trips with scenic views, like Colorado and Montana.

Robert married Arlene Fuchs at St. Francis, Humphrey. They had three children, Monica, Sara (Joe Becker) and Jeremy.

Robert is also survived by his grandchildren, Danny, Sadie, Lilly, Charlie, Josie, Woody and Teddy; siblings, Michael (Gretchen), Steven (Carol), Mark, Geraldine (Ron) Harris, Cathy (Larry) Woods and Brenda (Glen) Tolliver; and many special friends, including Mary J. Meister.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Agnes Dickes, and William and Alfreda Meyer; his parents; and brother, William.
