Connie Vanness

WAUSA – Funeral services for Connie Vanness, 72, Wausa, will be held at 10 a.m., Sept. 23, at Golgotha Lutheran Church, rural Wausa.

The Rev. Jacob Bobby will officiate, with burial in Golgotha Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Sept. 22, at the church.

Brockhaus Funeral Home, Wausa, is in charge of arrangements.

Connie died Sept. 13, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society, Bloomfield.

Connie Lynn (Babl) Vanness was born May 28, 1951, to Louis and Berneice (Schneider) Babl in Ainsworth. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Catholic faith.

Connie attended St. Boniface Catholic School through the eighth grade and later graduated from Stuart High School in 1969. In 1973, Connie graduated from Kearney State with a bachelor of science degree in vocational home economics. Connie started her teaching career in Creighton, but then left teaching to stay home with her kids while they were little. In 1991, she returned to teaching as the home economics teacher and the school librarian in Wausa. In addition, she also traveled to Bloomfield to teach during this time. After 25 years in the classroom, Connie retired.

Connie married Byron Vanness July 21, 1973, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Stuart. The couple just recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They had three children, Eric Vanness, Pierce; Jennifer Gansebom, Osmond; and Sarah Rasmus, Tea, S.D. The couple lived on the family farm southeast of Wausa for the past 50 years. Recently, Connie moved to the Good Samaritan Society, Bloomfield.

Connie was confirmed into Golgotha Lutheran Church Nov. 7, 1976, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. Connie was involved in her children’s activities for a number of years. After retirement, she enjoyed spending her time in book club, volunteering at the local daycare, caring for her grandkids and attending all of their activities.

She is survived by her husband, Byron Vanness; children, Eric (Sandra) Vanness, Jennifer (Shawn) Gansebom and Sarah (Nick) Rasmus; and grandchildren, Joshua Gansebom, Mason Gansebom, Cody Gansebom, Elliot Vanness, Dawson Gansebom, Autumn Vanness and Levi Rasmus.

Connie was preceded in death by her father, Louis Babl; mother, Berneice Kaup; step father, Victor Kaup; father-in-law, Loy Vanness; mother-in-law, Veryln Vanness; sister-in-law, Rhonda Babl; brother-inlaw, Harry Farley; and nephew, Michael Nickolai.

Memorial donations will be designated for the pipe organ repairs at Golgotha Lutheran Church and to Mission Central.
