Former Wausa Gazette Publisher dies at the age of 78

SOUTH SIOUX CITY — Former Wausa Gazette Publisher Duane Hamm, 78, died Nov. 20, 2018. He owned and operated the Gazette for 11 years. He is the second former Gazette Publisher to die this year. Josiane Reinhardt died July 18 at Our Lady of Peace Hospice in Saint Paul, Minn. She and her husband Bob, ran the Gazette from 1983-2000. He died in 2012. Duane began a long career in the newspaper business in seventh grade at the Osmond Republican.  He worked at the Wakefield Republican and the Wayne Herald before purchasing The Wausa Gazette in February, 1971 from Richard Schultz. He and his wife Sharon owned and operated the Gazette until 1983 when they sold the operation to Josiane and Robert Reinhardt.  After a brief waterbed business, he returned to a job featuring his love of printing. He managed the Yankton Printing Company, a part of the Yankton Daily Press and Dakoton.  He also wrote a weekly column for the Norfolk Daily News and delivered regional Shoppers for many years after retiring. He graduated from Osmond Public School in 1957, lettering in football and track.  He also enjoyed a long softball career, pitching on various teams for 25 years.
