Wynot puts on a clinic against Cards

WYNOT — The score might not look like much, but a lot could be taken away by the Randolph Lady Cardinals defeat prior to the Christmas break last week.

The girls dropped a 39-6 basketball decision to state powererhouse and rival Wynot, but what the score doesn’t show is the amount of grit the Lady Cardinals had despite the pending result.

Wynot broke out to a 20-0 lead as Randolph failed to hit on its early attempts and was plagued by what amounted to 28 turnovers. However, with a myriad of factors weighing against them, the Lady Cardinals refused to stop fighting and didn’t allow the result to be much worse which the statistics and the opponent would have dictated being so.

“We have a lot of work to do,” senior Emma Munter said. “We’ve had a tough schedule so far. We still have to stay motivated and come to practice ready to make it better than the day before.

“(The Wynot game) we played pretty good, and they are Wynot. In previous years we lost by way more, so that’s a perk. They are always good and one of the best in state, conference and district. We stayed aggressive and we had to match their intensity. I think anger and frustration from getting the ball stolen drove us to keep playing harder. We know we are not the most talented team out there so we know we have to fight with everything we have to give it our best shot.”

Munter said the team needs to become more efficient at knowing and running the offense more effectively.

“A lot of it is passing too – the game before we had terrible passes,” Munter said. “We didn’t take as many shots as we normally do, and we couldn’t get the ball to the hoop.”

Head coach Marcus Pappenhausen (0-6) has seen his team struggle out of the gate, but some of those were expected.

“Coming into the season we knew that these first games before break would be tough, with the level of competition and the inexperience we had,” Pappenhausen said. “Hopefully after break the girls can show that they have learned the things they need to know to get some victories after break. We talk about doing the little things. So, we need to start doing the little things and showing the discipline to do it.”

Against Wynot, the team got baskets by Ariel Fye, Jacey Bartels and Erin Engel and Pappenhausen said an uptick in confidence would have helped the team handle the infamous Wynot fullcourt pressure.

“After break, we will be looking for a girl or two to step up and be a leader and take charge,” Pappenhausen said. “We need a change in momentum to get things swung our way. If we can get a couple girls to take charge and lead on the court that will help the team in a big way. We have girls who are capable of doing this that need to step up and fill that role.”
