Wrestlers compete at Summerland and Stanton

The Osmond wrestling team competed in two invitationals last week — Summerland and Stanton.

Summerland Invitational

CLEARWATER — The wrestling team competed in the Summerland invitational held in Clearwater on Thursday, Dec. 10. The Tigers scored 51 points and finished in seventh place out of the 12 teams competing.

The Tigers were led by Robert Aschoff and Dominic True who both finished in second place in their weight brackets. Also placing for Osmond were Hunter Beacom and Bodie True who each finished in third place in their weight brackets. All four wrestlers who competed earned medals for the Tigers.

Robert wrestled a tremendous tournament. He fell behind early in his first match but came back strong in the second and third periods to earn a major decision over the number two seeded wrestlers from Hartington Cedar Catholic (HCC). After the first match he continued to wrestle well and ended with three more pins and a second-place finish at 106 lbs.

Dominic was in a small 126-lb. bracket and ended up wrestling the same kid from Winside twice. Dominic wrestled well in both matches and ended up finishing in second place.

Hunter started the tournament by winning a close one-point decision in his first match. He then lost his next two matches before coming back strong and finishing with two straight pins to earn a third-place finish at 132 lbs.

Bodie also won his first match earning a first period pin. Bodie then lost his next two matches before also coming back strong and getting two wins by pin in his last two matches to finish in third place in the 152 lb. bracket.

"I was really pleased with how all the kids finished the tournament," commented Coach Larry McKenna. "We had a rough second and third round, but the kids came back and wrestled hard and ended the tournament well. We were a combined five and two in the last two rounds with all five wins being by pin."

Hunter Beacom won by 10-9 decision over Gage Stutzman of Howells, lost by pin to Eli Thiele of SMLD, lost by pin to Ty Rainforth of O'Neill, won by pin over Kullen Cartella of O'Neill, won by pin over Cole Steffensen of HCC

Bodie True won by pin over Will Schmitz of St. Mary's, lost by pin to Conner Hochstein of HCC, lost by pin to Levi Drueke of O'Neill, won by pin over Tyson Coufal of Howells, won by pin over Fernando Gutierrez of O'Neill

Stanton Invite

STANTON — The Tiger wrestlers competed at the Stanton invite on Saturday, Dec. 12. The Tigers scored 73 points and finished in fourth place out of the 13 teams competing.

The Tigers were led by Hunter Beacom who finished in first place in the 132-lb. weight bracket. Also placing for Osmond were Robert Aschoff and Dominic True, who each finished in second place in their brackets. Alex Vinson and Patrick Vinson also placed for Osmond, finishing in third place in their weight brackets.

"I thought all the kids wrestled really well," said Coach McKenna. "Hunter Beacom had a great day, finishing with four pins and a major decision to earn first place at 132 lbs. Hunter wrestled well all day but really had a good match in the finals, winning a 13-2 major decision over Ethan Zegers of David City. Robert started the day with a hard-fought 7-6 win in his first match. He then followed that with two more pins to finish with a record of 3-1 and place second at 106 lbs. Dominic started the day with a pin and wrestled well all day to earn his second straight runner-up finish, this time at 120 lbs. Alex Vinson also wrestled well finishing with a record of three wins and two losses with all three wins coming by pin to earn third place at 152 lbs. Patrick Vinson also had a good day, recording two pins on his way to a third place finish at 160 lbs.

"This was probably our best tournaments in several years. We were able to finish in fourth place out of the 13 teams competing. We had all five of our wrestlers finish in the top three in their brackets, including an individual champion. You could tell that the kids all wrestled hard as we ended with 13 pins and a major decision."

Alex Vinson (152 lbs.) won by pin over Tylor Kment of Stanton, lost by pin to Conner Hochstein of HCC, lost by 0-16 decision to Clayton Harris of DC, won by pin over Noah Wattier of NC, won by pin over Ronnie Ramirez of Wakefield

Patrick Vinson (160 lbs.) won by pin over Korth Kale of HCC, lost by pin to Ethan Baumert of GACC, lost by pin to Francisco Mendez of NC, won by pin over Anton Wurdinger of Stanton
