Wortman is expected to lead Randolph runners

RANDOLPH — It’s another year and more high hopes for the Randolph High School cross country program.

Just knowing they will be able to run at all is a bonus considering the COVID-19 pandemic that has kept everyone in suspense around the country.

For Cardinal head coach Tom Shafer, year eight is a follow up on a 2019 season that saw some great successes.

“Last year I had a few medal winners at meets, one senior girl and a junior boy,” Shafer said. “No one made it to state. This year I have junior Gabe Wortman back who was a medal winner at a couple of meets last year and three other freshman boys.”

Those newcomers are Justin Guenther, Jake Harder, and Brayden Shearer.

However, the Randolph team won’t be fielding a girls’ team, but that won’t deter Shafer from the good vibes he has on the other side.

“Those boys should all do well this year, they have been training hard,” Shafer said. “I have seven junior high boys out and one girl.”

Randolph opens up the season Thursday at Hartington-Newcastle.

“After the first meet it will be easier to see where there training needs to be emphasized,” Shafer said. “We just hope to get the season in.”
