Wausa’s Lady Vikings move to 4-1 on the young season

TILDEN — It’s been quite the start to the campaign for the Wausa Lady Vikings volleyball team.

Wausa is 4-1 overall after splitting at the Elkhorn Valley triangular, losing to the hosts (25- 23, 25-21) and beating Winside (25-11, 25-19).

Despite the first loss of the season, the Lady Vikings are still feeling good mojo.

“I am disappointed in the loss to Elkhorn Valley because we more than played well enough to win the match but had some unforced errors at inopportune times that cost us the match,” Wausa head coach Greg Conn said. “What impressed me the most is what we put emphasis on during practice this week transitioned well to both matches. We were able to make adjustments at times without using timeouts.

Junior Abby Kaiser and sophomore Hunter West had a strong evening in the serve receive department. Kaiser was good on 26 of 28 receives and West was good on 19 of 20 receives.

“When the serve receive is working like it worked tonight in both matches, good things happen,” Conn said.

West had eight kills and 11 digs against Winside, Ali Lundberg had five solo blocks, Abrielle Nelson contributed nine digs and Sienna West finished with 19 assists.

Highlight performances against Elkhorn Valley included Hunter West (seven kills), Alexa Cunningham (four solo blocks), Nelson (nine digs), Sienna West (18 assists).

The Lady Vikings also beat Tri County Northeast 3-1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 26-24) as West recorded 20 kills and Alexa Cunningham and Reghan Bloomquist both had nine kills. Lundberg and Cunningham had four solo blocks apiece while Kaiser had 15 digs and Teyah Anderson had 39 assists.

“We have been on the road a lot and overall, we played amazing: I am so proud of the team,” Bloomquist said. “It’s so early in the season and we are already fighting and not giving up and not letting up. It’s going to be a good season. It’s a combination of we like each other and/or we respect each other. We are all so different off the court and have different lives, but on the court, we work together no matter what the circumstance.

“If someone doesn’t like you off the court, it doesn’t matter, we are a family on the court and we get along.”

Bloomquist feels the teams commonality centers around the girls being all quite competitive and that brings them together.

“We all have the same idea in our head, and we want to go far with this,” Bloomquist said. “It helps us that we have the same goal, and it drives us closer and closer each game and each practice. We all like the same things when we are together in practice.

“You can really tell we are a team when we are out there and with everything we talk about.”

Wausa will host Bloomfield on Thursday which will be the second match in two weeks between the rivals.

“Throw the records away when you are playing a rival game because momentum and energy are key in a match such as this,” Conn said. “Bloomfield is a much-improved team from a year ago as they were very tough to get a ball down, they really dug the ball well against us in our first meeting. We just have to keep improving on what we have been focusing on in practice and just get the job done.”
