Wausa track teams race off to a good start on the 2021 spring season

NELIGH — It was a season opener that went pretty well in the eyes of Wausa Vikings track coach Greg Conn.

The Vikings participated at the Neligh Warrior Relays over the weekend and the Wausa girls varsity team wrapped up second place overall with 97 points, just three short of the top squad — Elkhorn Valley.

The boys ended up in sixth place with 39 points. “We had a great day for this meet, and I thought the kids did a great job of competing,” Conn said. “This was the first time we have ever competed in a relay meet so it was good to see how well we placed. I thought that we had some great marks in some of the field events for the first meet out and we had quite a few PRs.”

Personal bests were only produced from juniors and seniors since those are in comparison to the 2019 campaign since 2020 was not able to play out.

“However, I am quite sure that we will have some new PRs for the underclassman as we move on to Tuesday at Plainview for the Plainview Invitational,” Conn said.

Top three finishers for the Vikings for the girls included the shot put relay team (Morgan Kleinschmit, Taylor Alexander and Alexi Munter, 85’1”, first), the 4x200 relay (Ashlynn Timmerman, Alexa Cunningham, Brooke Kumm and Blair Wakeley, 2:01.09, first), long jump re lay (Wakeley, Cunningham, Sienna West, 41’2.5”, first), sprint medley relay (Wakeley, Nelson, Cunningham, Leah Bloomquist (4:44.37, first), field event relay (Kleinschmit, Kate Lundberg, Ali Lundberg, Munter, 1:03.18, second), 4x800 relay (Darla Nelson, Teyah Anderson, Emily Woockman, Carry Martinsen, 12:04.7, second), discus relay (Kleinschmit, Ali Lundberg, Kate Lundberg, 248’4”, second), high jump relay (Christina Martinsen, Cunningham, Kumm, 8’8”, third) and the 4x400-relay (Bloomquist, Wakeley, Christina Martinsen, Nelson, 4:41.95, third).

The boys were led by the sprint medley relay (Steel Claussen, Josh Wattier, Jaxon Claussen, Addison Smith, 4:02.03, first), distance medley relay (Brandon Kristensen, Tyler Baue, Cade Wakeley, Smith, 12:47.7, second) and the high jump relay (Jaxon Claussen, Christiansen, third).

“Jaxon Claussen had a great start to the season by going 6-3 in the high jump and 40-1 in the triple jump,” Conn said. “Addison ran a 2:12 split in the 800 and a 5:07 split on the 1,600 in both the sprint and the distance Medley. Morgan hit a PR in the discus throwing 92-4 along with Ali throwing 88-7 for a PR.

“Our girls sprint medley and distance medley relays ran very well winning both of those events along with the boys winning the sprint medley as well. Again, it was a great start to the season and a great event to build from.”
