Wausa Softball compete at State

WAUSA — This past week ended the 16/18 Viking Softball team’s season ended.

The team played Tuesday night in Wakefield to make up a game that was canceled earlier this season due to rain. Sienna West started pitching for the first game. The Lady Vikings started strong in the 1st inning by holding Wakefield and not letting them score. The Lady Vikings were able to bring in 4 runs. The Lady Vikings would not score again this game, but their defense was strong and held Wakefield scoreless. Jaide Kaiser would come into pitch at the bottom of the 6th inning to finish out the game to bring home the win with a score of 4-0. During the 2nd game of the night, Charlie Price would start as pitcher. The Lady Vikings struggled for the first 2 innings and would allow Wakefield to score 1 run but would not be able to score themselves. During the 3rd inning the Lady Vikings would bring home 2 runs to put them in the lead. During the 4th inning, Jaide Kaiser would come into pitch to finish out the inning but not before Wakefield would score a run to tie up the game. The 6th inning would be the Lady Viking’s inning. They would score 6 runs to secure their win. Charlie Price, Abby Kaiser, Taylor Alexander, and Peyton Privett would hit doubles. The Lady Vikings would only allow Wakefield to score 2 runs at the bottom of the inning to secure the win with a score 8-4.

The Lady Vikings would travel to Hasting on Friday to start their journey at the State Softball Tournament.

The Lady Vikings would take on Oakland Rockets on Friday night. They would win the coin toss and take the field first. The defense of the Vikings was tough this game as they held Oakland to only 4 runs for the entire game. The Lady Vikings would also face a tough defense from Oakland as only 6 runs would be scored for the Lady Vikings. Morgan Kleinschmit would have an epic play as 3rd basemen. As Oakland had a runner on 3rd base and 2nd base, the batter would hit to 3rd base. Morgan faked the throw to 1st base, in which the Oakland runner on 3rd base would try to steal home but Morgan would throw the ball back to Madison Abbenhaus covering 3rd base for the tag out. The Lady Vikings would advance to 2nd round with the win over Oakland.

The Lady Vikings would take on Meridan on Saturday. The Vikings would bat first but were unable to bring any runs home in the 1st inning. Meridan would get 2 runs home despite a double play at the end of 1st inning by Peyton Privett as she caught the pop fly and then threw the runner out on 3rd base. In the 2nd inning, Taylor Privett, Taylor Alexander, and Madison Abbenhaus would hit singles, while Jaide Kaiser and Blair Wakeley would be walked. Addison Sporleder would get hit by a pitch and be able to take 1st base while Peyton hit a double. This allowed the Vikings to bring in 4 runs giving the Vikings the lead. The Vikings would not score again for the remainder of the game, but the defense only allowed 1 more run to be brought in for Meridan. The Vikings would take another win with a score of 4-3.

Later that night the Vikings would play Ponca 18s whom they have met 3 times this season and been successful in taking the win all 3 times. Unfortunately, the Lady Vikings would not be successful this time. The Lady Vikings would struggle getting runs scored and would only have 1 single run scored this game. It seemed like every good hit had by the Lady Vikings would be hit to Ponca’s players. The Vikings defense just could not hold off Ponca as 9 runs were scored by their team. The Lady Vikings would move into the Loser’s bracket and have their next game on Sunday morning.

The Vikings would take on Fullerton bright and early on Sunday Morning. The Lady Vikings would get their bats going this game. The Lady Vikings would get 5 runs the 1st inning, 4 runs the 2nd inning and 3rd inning. The Lady Vikings had only allowed Fullerton 4 runs up in 4 innings. Mother Nature would halt the game with lightning with 10 minutes and 45 seconds left on the clock. The Vikings were up 13-4 and only needed 1 more run to end the game due to run rule. The Lady Vikings would need to wait to finish the inning and take the win over Fullerton.

The Lady Vikings would take on Ponca 16 team to make their way back to the championship. The Lady Vikings had been able to take the win 2 times against them when meeting them in regular season and districts but had dropped 2 games to them also. The Lady Vikings knew it would be a tough battle. Ponca started strong earning 9 runs in the 1st inning.

This was too much for the Lady Vikings to overcome and they would end their run at State Softball with a loss to Ponca 16 with a final score of 6-15. The Lady Vikings would bring home fourth place.

It was a great accomplishment.

One of the Lady Vikings will continue her career in softball at Northeast Nebraska Community College on their softball team. Morgan Kleinschmit has signed with the Hawks to play for their softball team. It will be great to continue to watch her play as she has a great talent. She has a knowledge of the game and is very fun to watch.
