Wausa keeps Cards winless on the season

RANDOLPH — The Randolph Cardinals football team may not have had the season it hoped for, but in many ways, plenty was accomplished.

Yes, they lost their finale to rivals Wausa, 69-6 last weekend and finally faced the Vikings after their 2020 date due to COVID-19.

But, despite wrapping up the campaign winless (0-8) the attitude is still hopeful that it could lay the groundwork for a future rise in fortunes.

“I didn’t know what high school tdoor was going to be like,” freshman Shaw Backer said. “I hoped the echanical season could have been better Time – and we kind of gave up in the second needed to play ard half – cover. we definitely Programm harder. We had a lot of young so hopefully it will tervals. players out there (106348) help us more in the future.

“The older kids helped us freshmen out. They tell us where to or go when we ask and they help us out on the field and in practice. We have never really been that mad at each other. We might get angry if we aren’t blocking for each other, but we usually have a play here or there that help with our positivity.”

Backer also added that the team overall gets along well and that helped with the Cardinals keeping a positive attitude during the season.

Against Wausa, the visiting Cardinals faced a team with playoff aspirations and had to meet that intent with theirs of just hoping to have a solid game before calling it a wrap. r

“Wausa struck early and scored, and we had a hard time able stopping their offense,” Randolph head coach Mark Lech said. “We moved the ball well and scored in the second quarter but couldn’t stop Wausa or put enough points up to keep the game competitive.”

Randolph’s lone score was a run by Becker for eight yards. The Cardinals were led on defense by Aiden Gubbels who led the team in tackles.

“We needed to keep on our blocks and that was a lot of our problem,” Backer said. “It was definitely a learning experience. If you aren’t aggressive or scared, you are going to be run over.”

Isaiah Salmon threw for 79 yards and Bryon Eledge rushed for a team-best 54 yards on 15 carries to lead the Cardinals.

“The seniors helped lead the team throughout the season,” Lech said. “It would have been easy to quit, but they stuck it out and helped motivate the underclassmen to keep on fighting. The underclassmen played a lot of minutes and got a lot of valuable & experience going forward.

We look forward to regrouping next year, which is also a transition our year to a whole new schedule.” Wausa 28 21 14 6 - 69 Randolph 0 0 6 0 - 6 er

Mike CORRECTION: Vanness, 1. Last week’s story about the Randolph Public Schools Board meeting indicated Superintendent Jeff Hoesing presented figures on tax asking for the last seven years. That part of the story contained some incorrect information.

The general fund tax asking decreased more than $37,000 every year over the seven years which is different from the overall tax asking which has increased an average of more than $16,000 over those same seven years, resulting in a slight increase of less than 1 percent.

The Randolph Times regrets the error and strives for accuracy in its reporting.
