Wausa girls earn top spot in subdistricts

WAUSA — Wausa wrapped up Lewis and Clark Conference play with a consolation round, 2-0 (25-16, 25-23) win over Tri-County Northeast.

It was a good way to cap a successful regular season, Coach Greg Conn said.

Wausa earned the top spot in the subdistrict tournament and the right to host the tourney.

The top-seeded Lady Vikings (16-10) played the winner of No. 4 Tri County Northeast (11-18) and No. 5 Walthill (3-26) Monday.

“All the hard work we put into the season has given us the opportunity to host our sub district,” Conn said.

The Lady Vikings finished up conference play after falling to Wakefield (28-26, 23-25, 25-22) in the quarterfinals.

“Against Wakefield, we let the first game get away from us as we were ahead 22-18 and just didn’t finish,” Conn said. “Sometimes we get in this funk of playing not to lose instead of finishing off a set aggressively. In the second and third sets. I thought we really played as well as I have seen us play all year, so we know that we have the skill set, we just need to let those skills push us through the end of the match.

Against Tri-County, Wausa  had a great run of serves and passed the ball well.

“This allowed our offense to do its thing and we won the match in straight sets,” Conn said.

Ali Lundberg served eight aces in the win while Hunter West had 11 kills in the Wakefield defeat while Reghan Bloomquist and Alexa Cunningham contributed three blocks apiece.

Conn noted the 16 wins is a high mark for the program in recent seasons.

Sophomore setter Sienna West felt that despite not going all the way in the conference tournament that the team played well and should be ready for subdistricts.

“We have been working hard and playing well,” she said. “We are also working well together. Our passing has gotten super good, and our hitting is better.”

She also said it is a good thing for the Lady Vikings to play the tournament at home.

“We will have a lot of fans there and they will be super supportive,” she said. “It was a successful season this year. We came out with a winning record, and I thought we worked hard and pushed it to the end of the regular season.

“We are ready for tournament time. I think we could go a long ways if we keep playing the way we are. We still need to get better for serving. I try to hit the ball too hard to try to get the ace. I should try to get the ball across the net so our defense can work.”
