Wausa Club Volleyball traveled to Kearney for play in first tournament

WAUSA — Volleyball isn’t over for some Lady Vikings as there is a club volleyball team here in Wausa. Jessica Kaiser and Shelbey West started the team last year but were only able to attend 2 tournaments before their season was cut short with the pandemic. This year the team has a full slate of tournaments throughout March and into April. The girls have been practicing for 4 weeks and had their first tournament this past weekend in Kearney. The girls would travel to University of Nebraska-Kearney to play in the Runza Rumble tournament in the 17 & under age division. The team is made of players that will play next season and is an opportunity to gain valuable skills and lessons by playing teams from all over the state that they normally would not play. It also allows the girls to play together in the off season and become more comfortable with each other and improve as a team.

The team participated in pool play in the Sunday afternoon session. The first team the girls played was Twin Valley Jrs 17 team. They would win both sets against that team. Then they played the Nebraska Gold 17 Blue team out of Kearney Club Volleyball league. This team was a very skilled team with players from much larger programs, but the Lady Vikings competed with them. They did lose both sets but not by much each set. After these two games, it put the Lady Vikings in the 2nd place pool play bracket. They would play two more games against teams that ended 2nd in their respective pools. The Lady Vikings would play Nebraska X and Minden 17 and under teams. The Lady Vikings played good volleyball but were just short of taking home the wins in these two games.

The games were played in the UNK Volleyball complex and had 6 games on the court being played at once. It was a new experience for the girls and something that does take some getting used to. The girls will be in action again on Saturday, March 13 in St Paul, NE.
