Wausa baseball, softball teams were busy last week

WAUSA — It was another busy week for the Wausa Summer League athletes despite having Monday off for the Memorial Day Holiday.

Randolph traveled to Wausa to take on the softball teams on Tuesday.

The 5/6 softball team ended in a tie but were fun to watch. The little Lady Vikings are learning and having fun playing.

The 7/8 Lady Vikings played a good game but ended up coming up short losing 10-11. They Little Lady Vikings had some great plays and were working hard on the field.

The 11/12 Lady Vikings won their game 5-4 along with the 13/14 Lady Vikings with a score of 11-10.

The 16/18 Lady Vikings won their home game big with a score of 18-2. Blair Wakeley would pitch the full game for the Lady Vikings. The bats were really on fire for the Lady Vikings with everyone getting on base at least once. During the 1st inning, Madison Abbenhaus and Abby Kaiser would get on base with walks. Morgan Kleinschmit would hit along with Blair Wakeley. Taylor Alexander and Holly Johnson would hit doubles in the first inning. Charlie Price would bunt her way to base. The Lady Vikings would allow only 1 one by the Lady Cardinals in the 2nd inning. During the 2nd inning the Lady Vikings scored 11 runs. Morgan Kleinschmit hit a triple to bring Abby home. The Lady Cardinals only scored one more run in the third inning to give Wausa the win.

The league teams traveled to Neligh Wednesday. The 5/6 baseball team tied but played great baseball. They are learning and becoming better with each game.

The 7/8 baseball team lost in a very close game. The final score was 13-15.

The 9/10 baseball team played a modified double-header with each game being only 50 minutes long.

During the first inning the Vikings could not bring any runs home. Crue Clausen would start as pitcher for the Vikings. Jake Schindler would earn an out as catcher by throwing to 1st base. Ben Barta would earn the 2nd out by tagging the runner to 2nd base and then Crue would finish out the inning with a snag at pitcher and a throw to 1st base. The second inning was also scoreless for the Vikings. Crue pitched again and earned two strikeouts. The third out came come from a strikeout also but from the coach as the pitchers are given five pitches and then the coach will pitch. This rule helps to build pitchers at younger ages and allow them the chance to learn. The Vikings were up again to bat at the top of the 3rd inning and were down 0-3. Noel Kumm got a single and then Drew Dawson got hit by a pitch to earn a walk. Dawson Kraft would hit a single and this would load the bases for the Vikings with one out. Ashton Baue hit a grand slam home run to put the Vikings up by one run. Levi Suhr and Jake Schindler would hit singles. Crue would also hit a single but Levi would take two bases to bring home another run putting the Vikings up by two. Ben Barta would finish out the game as pitcher. The Vikings had to hold Neligh to win the game. Crue took the first out on first base by fielding a ground ball and tagging the base. Ashton Baue fielded another one at third and threw to first for the next out. Rudd Carlson made an amazing catch in right field by diving for the ball for the final out. The 9/10 baseball team took the win in the first game 5-4.

The second game of the double header was against a second Neligh team as they have enough for two teams. Dawson Kraft started the first inning with a single. Ashton Baue hit another home run bringing home Dawson. Dawson started on the mound. Ashton caught a pop fly on third base for the first out. Ashton also earned the second out with a great tag out on third base on a runner trying to steal 3rd base. Dawson would earn a strikeout for the 3rd out. During the 2nd inning the Vikings would get runners on base with singles from Jake, Crue, Rudd and Trace Wakeley but could not get a runner home. Dawson would pitch again, and Ben would earn an out on 2nd base with a pop-up catch. Dawson would get the new 2 outs by striking out the batter. The 3rd inning was a scoreless inning for the Vikings. Ashton would come in as pitcher. Ashton would ground the ball and throw to Rudd at 1st base to earn 2 outs before earning the 3rd out with a strikeout. The 4th inning would be an exciting one. The Vikings were down by 4 and they tried their best to earn some runs. Noel Anderson would hit a double and Jake would hit a single to bring Noel home. Crue took a ball to the ribs to earn a walk. Rudd hit a single to bring Jake home. Noel Kumm also took a ball to the helmet for a walk. The Vikings could not bring any more runners home and lost 4-6. The boys pushed through and played a full 7 innings of ball. These will help for the upcoming tournament.

The Softball teams along with the Osmond PeeWees 11/12 baseball team and Wausa Pony 13/14 baseball team traveled to Osmond Thursday night.

The softball teams took on Osmond and the combined baseball teams played Summerland.

The little Lady Viking 5/6 softball team earned a tie in their game. The 7/8 Lady Vikings also tied their game at 5-5.

The 11/12 Lady Vikings lost 8-7 to the Lady Tigers. Another loss came in the 13/14 Lady Viking game with a score of 8-9.

The 16/18 Lady Vikings put up a tough battle but also took a one-run loss — 3-2. Jaide Kaiser pitched the entire game for Wausa. She earned 10 strikeouts in the first four innings. Peyton Privett and Taylor Privett helped with the outs with pop fly catches in center field and left field. In the first three innings of the game the Lady Vikings remained scoreless as they stranded two runners on base. In the fourth inning Peyton Privett got on base and made it home because of a triple by her sister Taylor Privett. Taylor also came home putting the Lady Vikings up by one run. The Vikings were not able to get a run home in the fifth inning and just needed to hold the Lady Tigers in the bottom of the fifth inning. Unfortunately, the Lady Vikings could not close out the frame and ended up allowing two Lady Tiger runs.

The 13/14 Pony Wausa baseball team took on Summerland Thursday night in Osmond. Jake Munter would pitch the game for the Vikings. The Vikings would hold Summerland during the first inning scoreless with outs from Cody Gansebom throwing from short stop to 1st base for the 1st out, Jake snagging a ground ball as pitcher to 1st for the 2nd out and Jake earning a strikeout. Unfortunately, the Vikings could not get on base that 1st inning either. During the 2nd inning Jake would earn all 3 outs in strikeouts but not before Summerland could get a run home. The Vikings would continue to battle getting runs home but would get Koy Kraft home from a single from Colton Baue in the 3rd inning. The Vikings would work hard in the top of the 4th inning to earn the outs with a few outs from pop outs to Colton as catcher and Brady Kristensen in right field. During the bottom of the 4th inning Cade Wakeley would hit a single with a hit to center field and would steal to 2nd but not be able to make it home before the 3rd out against the Vikings. Cade would go to work on 2nd base and field 2 ground balls for throws to 1st base for 2 outs and then Donavin Seagren would catch a pop fly for another out. The score at the bottom of the 4th inning had the Vikings down 1-3.

The Vikings allowed Summerland to earn 4 runs in the 5th inning despite Jake earning 2 strikeouts and Cody Gansebom fielding a ground ball to short and throw to Cade Wakeley on 2nd base. During the bottom of the 6th inning Cody would walk to 1st, Jake Munter would get on 1st from 3rd strike drop, and Vincent Vanness would walk. Jake would steal home on a wild pitch. Cade and Donavin walked to load the bases, but the Vikings could not capitalize before Summerland earned the third out. The Vikings would lose 2-7. These players have worked hard and improved. A win is surely in their future as they improve every game.

The only games at home this week will be on Wednesday when Wausa Baseball hosts Creighton. The 16/18 Lady Vikings will start District play in Ponca on Friday night taking on the Pierce Pacers. Stay tuned for results.
