Wausa Baseball Field receives new scoreboard

WAUSA— Even though there might not be youth softball and baseball this summer in Wausa, improvements are still happening in preparation for next year. On July 2nd, 2020, the new scoreboard for the baseball field was installed. Mike Burns, Tyler Kleinschmit, Kenny Bloomquist, Tyler Fincher, Greg Conn, Bruce Kristensen and Brian Wakeley graciously donated their Thursday evening to help install the new scoreboard. The generous donations from community members made this scoreboard a reality for the community. The family of Mike Clausen helped tremendously with a donation in his memory. The scoreboard is going to be dedicated in his name again. The previous scoreboard was donated in his memory by his wife, Deb, and their children Neil, Brent and Kendra, in the mid-1990s. Without the generosity of all the people who donated money or time, the new scoreboard would not have been possible.

The new scoreboard is a true baseball scoreboard with the score tallied for each of the 9 innings of play and was purchased through Daktronics in Brookings, SD. The new scoreboard is quite a bit larger than the previous one, so hopefully can be seen clearly from anywhere in the ballpark. The new scoreboard can be run from any smartphone that has the scorekeeping app loaded on to it. This new feature will help as then the volunteers can keep score from anywhere in the ball field. The freedom to be able to walk around and sit anywhere you want yet help keep score will help the scorekeeper. Usually our volunteers wear multiple hats during the season, so they could be multi-tasking during a game by keeping score and maybe running the concession stand!

The Wausa Summer League committee would like to thank everyone who has helped us this summer with improvements on the field. The yellow plastic topper was installed on the softball field earlier this spring by Brandon Kirby, Bruce and Brandon Kristensen, Brian and Tiffanie Wakeley along with Shelbey West. We hope that everyone will come out and watch these teams next year as we know many of them really missed the sport this summer. The time spent at these ballparks throughout the season are memories many will cherish for a lifetime. The committee’s appreciation to everyone in the community for their continued support can be summed up in a quote from a popular baseball movie, “if you build it, they will come”.
