Vikings post a 2-1 mark for the week

WAUSA — As the last couple weeks have shown, this year for the Viking basketball team has proven to be challenging. It has been a year filled with struggles every young team faces: new teammates at the varsity level; more complicated plays; and games filled with tough calls, bad passes, and missed baskets. However, on the positive side, the Vikings have forged on through the animosity they have faced. This week, they saw competitions with the Elkhorn Valley Falcons, Tri-County Northeast (Allen and Emerson-Hubbard) Wolfpack, and Winside Wildcats.

The week began against the Falcons at Tilden. The game had started much the same as the last few had: tight. The Vikings outscored the Falcons 13 – 10 in the first with Brandon Kristensen coming out with the hot hand scoring 8 out of the 13 points that quarter. In the second, however, the Falcons fought back and took the lead ending the half with a score of 34 – 30. The game continued changing hands for the remainder of the night, but thanks to great defense and another astonishing night by Jaxon Claussen with 28 points, the Vikings were just able to hold on finishing the night on top with a final score of 58 – 54. Other top scorers for the night were Brandon Kristensen (12 points) and Cory Schumacher (11 points).

Although the win against the Falcons gave the Vikings a much-needed boost of confidence, it wasn’t quite enough against Tri-County’s Wolfpack. The first half of Thursday night’s game was pretty quiet with both teams only scoring

a collective 30 points, nevertheless, the night wasn’t over. Even though there were only two field goals with the rest of their points being free throws from the Vikings during the first half, Addison Smith came from the locker room and shot the lights out with three (3) back-to-back 3-pointers. It just wasn’t enough, though, as the Wolfpack pushed forward and outmatched the Vikings with a final of 49 – 36. Addison Smith led the Vikings Thursday with 11 points, closely followed by Jaxon Claussen with 10.

The Vikings traveled to Winside on Friday night. From the start, the Vikings had control of the night as Cory Schumacher fiercely attacked the basket. Cory gave the Vikings the early lead and never backed down. The Vikes shut down the Wildcats 53 – 33. Cory led the Vikings in scoring with a spectacular 19 points while Jaxon Claussen contributed another solid 13. Come support the Vikings this Thursday as they take on Summerland at home.
