Vikings go 1 – 2 in Conference Tournament

WAUSA — The Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament began for the Vikings on Saturday, Jan. 30, as the Vikes travelled to Ponca to take on the Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats. As the night got started, the Wildcats jumped into the lead outscoring the Vikes 13 – 9 in the first quarter. However, the game wouldn’t be as easy as the Wildcats were hoping. The Vikes outscored them in the second with a score of 16 – 11. The night was back and forth for the remainder of the game as the Wildcats just couldn’t shake the Vikings, which resulted in a 49-all tie to end regulation. As the final four minutes of the game took place, the Wildcats had just enough left in the tank to finish off the Vikes by a slim two points, ending the night with another close loss for the Vikings of 56 – 54.

Top scorers for the night were Jaxon Claussen, 23, Cory Schumacher, 12, and Cashe Carlson, 11.

The loss Saturday took the boys into the consolation games, hosted by Wausa. The Vikes played the first game of the night against the Winside Wildcats. It took the Vikings a quarter to fully get into the game mentally, however, once they did, there was no stopping them. Scoring 24 points just in the second quarter, shot the Vikes to the lead the Wildcats by 20 points at halftime. Continuing to not only score, but make better passes and play as a team gave the Vikes the opportunity for the win of 55 – 26 over the Wildcats. Top scorer for the night was Jaxon Claussen with a massive 31 points.

The win on Tuesday had the boys playing one final Conference game against the Randolph Cardinals. The Cardinals had previously beaten the Vikings in January by 15 points. Unfortunately for Randolph, the night wouldn’t go as they planned. The Vikings, once again, got off to a slow start, only scoring a whole 10 points to Randolph’s 21 in the first half. Fortunately, thanks to hard work and a few words of encouragement from the coaches, the Vikings won both the third and fourth quarters. At the end of the night, Randolph was able to hold on for the win over the Vikings scoring 50 while the Vikes were only able to score 42.

“We’re improving with each game, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said Coach Schindler. “Even though the games don’t always end the way we’d like, we never give up.”

Top scorers for the night were Addison Smith, 15, and Jaxon Claussen, 12.
