Vikings fall short in season finale

WAUSA — The Viking Basketball team met with Santee Feb. 26, for their first round of sub-districts.

Excited for another chance at playing the Warriors, the Vikes hit the road and headed to O’Neill St. Mary’s for their 6:30 matchup. Filled with optimism, the Vikings went into the first quarter and were quickly shut down by a score of 17 – 8. Only two Vikes, Cory and Jaxon, scored those first eight (8).

After a quick new game plan at the end of the first, the Vikings came back and took the second quarter with a score of 18 points over Santee’s 9. After shutting down Austyn Saul, the Vikes were able to go into halftime filled with momentum and tied at 26.

After the half, things were looking good for the Vikings; they had come back from a nine-point deficit and tied the Warriors. They were not going home without a fight.

The turning point of the night, however, was when Marquis Tuttle hit a corner 3-point field-goal. He then, along with Romeo White, continued to cash it in for another nine 3-pointers. It was too much for the Vikings to make up, even though they tried with Addison Smith hitting three field goals of his own and Cashe Carlson working hard down low for another ten he added.

The Vikings’ season came to an end, being defeated with a final score of 84 – 56.

Top scorers for the night were Jaxon Claussen (16) and Addison Smith (14). Other top scorers for the night were Cory Schumacher and Cashe Carlson with ten (10) a piece.

Thoughts from Coach Schindler, “I want to thank the seniors for all of their hard work they’ve put in through the years,” said Coach Schindler. “I wish them nothing but the best in their futures. As a program, we’re excited to work hard this summer and get next year started.”
