Vikings earn third-place finish in Holiday Tournament
WAUSA — The Wausa Vikings went 1-1 over the holiday break, finishing third, with a loss to Bloomfield and a win over Boyd County at the Creighton Holiday Tournament.
The Vikings played Bloomfield in the first round Dec. 30. After leading 11-9 in the first quarter, the Bees’ 19-5 secondquarter run proved too difficult to overcome. The Vikes pulled within seven in the second half, only to have the Bees slam the door on any comeback efforts, as the Vikes fell 45-34.
Leading scorers for the game were Cory Schumacher and Jaxon Claussen with 11 points apiece. Cashe Carlson chipped in with five points for the Vikings. The Viking defense was led by Garrett Hegge, who collected seven steals in the defeat.
The Vikings bounced back on Thursday with a 56-40 win over Boyd County.
After the first quarter, Wausa led 17-13. They headed into halftime with a 30-22 lead. The Vikings never looked back, holding the Spartans to 18 second-half points on their way to the win.
Jaxon Claussen led the way with 19 points. Cory Schumacher had a solid night with 14 points, and Addison Smith added another eight points.
Coach Schindler was happy with the team’s effort.
“I was really happy after the boys bounced back after a tough loss to Bloomfield. Hopefully, we can use this momentum moving forward,” he said.
Senior Cory Schumacher said the Boyd County win gave the team a real boost.
“Being able to win this was a breath of fresh air in a way and allowed us to feel like we can get our mojo back,” Schumacher said. “We need to get in a groove on how we play together and do the things to be successful on offense and defense and be smarter as a team and individuals.”
The Vikings will open their annual Post-holiday Tournament this Thursday, Jan. 7, against Niobrara-Verdigre.
Friday, the LHNE-Osmond teams will battle it out with the girls and boys finals scheduled for 4 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
