Vikes fall to Bloomfield, but top St. Edward

BLOOMFIELD  — The regular season finale didn’t go too well for the Wausa Vikings, but the post-season opener couldn’t have gone better.

Wausa put a wrap on the 2019-20 regular season with a 68-49 setback against Bloomfield.

The Viking offense then opened SubDistrict action with a huge 70-47 win over St. Edward.

As their reward, the Vikes advanced to Tuesday’s SubDistrict game against one of the top teams in the entire state — undefeated Humphrey St. Francis.

The Purple and Gold  got off to a great start against Bloomfield, but couldn’t keep that momentum up for the entire contest.

Wausa earned a 24-17 scoring advantage in the first frame, but the Bees came back in the second quarter to outscore Wausa 13-8 and cut the Vikes’ halftime lead to just two points — 32-30.

The entire second half belonged to the home team.

Bloomfield put together a 17-8 scoring run in the third quarter to take the lead and closed out the game on a 21-9 run to seal the win.

The Bees Gabe Lauk led all scorers with 18 points. He earned a double-double on the night, as he also pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Vikes won the defensive battle in the first frame of Monday’s SubDistrict opener, putting together a 9-7 scoring advantage.

The Viking offense then roared to life in the second quarter, building a 23-14 advantage to take a 32-21 lead into the break. The Vikes offense stayed hot to open the second half, dropping in 21 points, while limiting the Beavers to just nine.

The two teams were dead even in the final frame as both hit for 17 points. The damage had already been done, though, and the Vikes came home with a 23-point win in tow.

The Vikes are now 4-20 on the season.
