Tigers dominate four in a row following post-holiday tournament

Since defeating Lutheran High Northeast 62-52 in the championship game of the Wausa Post-Holiday Tournament, the Osmond boys set their sights on four consecutive teams that wouldn’t be able to give the Tigers a fully competitive game.

In the following contests against Neligh-Oakdale, Bloomfield, Emerson-Hubbard, and Summerland the Tigers managed to outscored the four opponents an astonishing 279-97, outscoring the four teams by an average of 46 points per game (ppg)!

Sure, the four opponents currently have a combined 13 wins on the season, but the Tigers approached every contest with great effort and focus, resulting in four landslide victories! In the four wins, the Tigers outscored their opponent in 15 of the 16 quarters, that one quarter was the only double-digit scoring effort the Tiger defense allowed in 16 quarters of play.

Osmond capped it off in their fourth game, holding Summerland scoreless in the third quarter.

NELIGH — Three Tigers reached double-digits in scoring as they coasted their way past Neligh-Oakdale on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Keaton Timmerman led Osmond with 14, while sophomores Keaton Wattier and Ryan Schmit were close behind with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Osmond was entirely too much in the first half, outscoring the Warriors 52-16.

“I was foolish at halftime and told our guys to try to avoid getting up by 40 right away so they could all get some playing time,” said Head Coach Todd Schulze, “That turned out to be a mistake!”

Coach was right! The Tigers only managed to outscore the Warriors by four points in the second half. To the spectator, it looked as if the Tigers had taken their foot off the gas pedal and weren’t able to find it again in the final 16 minutes. A balanced attack was added by nine points from Graysen Schultze and seven apiece from Aaron Chishiba and Justus Maertins.

OSMOND — In the Tigers’ lone home game of the new week, they would host the now 9-6 Bloomfield Bees on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The defense was tenacious from start to finish for Osmond, not allowing Bloomfield more than seven points in a single quarter.

In addition, four Tigers scored in double figures. Timmerman, Schultze, Schmit, and Maertins scored 19, 14, 14 and 11, respectively, and proved to be too much for the Bees to handle. Chishiba and Schultze were in large part to thank for those scoring numbers, keeping the offense rolling with 4 assists apiece.

EMERSON — The Tigers traveled to Emerson on Thursday, Jan. 23, a game that was postponed because of the weather the previous Friday.

Osmond got off to somewhat of a slow start, only scoring 20 on the two-win Pirates. In the second quarter, things began to click for the Tigers, forcing more turnovers, gaining a huge advantage on the boards, outscoring E-H by 23 points in the second. With running a continuous running clock nearly the entire second half, the Tigers continued their energetic effort and still managed to put up 34 to the Pirates’ 13.

Four Tigers would again reach double-digits! Justus Maertins led the way with 15 points; Graysen Schultze and Ryan Schmit weren’t far behind with 14 and 13 points respectively. Timmerman put up 10.

The bench trio for Osmond (Zach Alderson, Josh Gansebom, Zach Huwaldt) combined for 18 points to help plunder the Pirates. A highlight of the night was watching a three-point attempt near the top of the key from Zach Huwaldt. The basketball seemingly left the atmosphere before it splashed down, touching nothing but net, to give the junior his first three-pointer of the season. The big fella currently sits atop the team percentage charts, making 100% of his attempts behind the arc.

ORCHARD — Finally, Friday night, Jan. 24, the Tigers would finish their back-to-back road trip with a game in Orchard against the Summerland Bobcats. A roster consisting of athletes from the communities of Orchard, Clearwater, and Ewing awaiting the Osmond competitors.

The Bobcats would take a thrashing from overpowering Tigers, being outscored 55-7 in the first three quarters of play. The Osmond defense, led by Chishiba, Maertins and Schultze, forced 28 turnovers and never allowed Summerland to be comfortable when on offense.

Schmit led the way in scoring with 18 points (15 of which coming off three-point attempts). Chishiba poured in 14 and Timmerman finished with 11 points as the Tigers contributed another balanced scoring attack to compliment their intense style of play on the defensive end.

The victory was Osmond’s 14th of the season. In all but two of the wins, the Tigers have held their opponent to under 40 points, helping to create a defensive average of 32.5 ppg.

Osmond looked forward to its most anticipated regular season matchup of the year, hosting the 12-3 LCC Bears on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The atmosphere was sure to be electric on game night as the Tigers aimed to remain undefeated.
