Schultze earns four gold medals; boys runner-up; girls eighth

PLAINVIEW — On a cold and windy Tuesday, March 30, senior Graysen Schultze and his Tiger teammates had a good day. Graysen started his four gold medal day by winning the triple jump with a personal best mark of 40-3.

In his other individual event, the 1,600 meters, he and teammate Johnson Chishiba settled in behind Norfolk Catholic’s Ben Hammond and Wausa’s Addison Smith. On the final lap, the leaders had about 10 meters on the two Tigers, but they started closing the gap on the final turn. Halfway down the straightaway, Graysen moved out to lane three and passed the leaders at the same time Johnson split the two and passed Hammond. Graysen’s winning time was 5:09.5 and Johnson’s third-place time was 5:10.5.

Graysen’s other two first-place finishes were on the 3,200-relay and the final event of the day, the 1,600-relay. In the 3,200-relay, Johnson got the team off to a solid start taking the lead and extending it till he handed off to Ryan Schmit, who also extended the lead over Norfolk Catholic.

Karter Johnson was next and also lengthened the advantage till he handed off to Graysen, who finished off the race with a nice anchor leg. Winning time was 9:28.9. In the 1,600-relay, basically the same story, but with a few different Tigers. This time, Bodie True took the lead early, then Johnson and Graysen both stretched it out and Connor Gutz left no doubt, beating Norfolk Catholic by five seconds. Winning time was 3:49.1.

Chishiba was also a gold medal winner in the 800 meters with a winning time of 2:15.5. Ryan Schmit was fourth in the race in 2:24.9. Kaden Polt was runner-up in the 110 high hurdles in 18.0 and was third in the 300 hurdles. Freshmen Spencer Hille and Owen Seversen also placed in the 300 hurdles in fourth and fifth places, respectively, in times of 49.8 and 53.1.

True was runner-up in the 200 meters in 24.7 with Zach Huwaldt fifth in 25.4 and Brenden Gillespie sixth in 25.5. Zach and Bodie and Brenden were all part of the secondplace 400-relay. Connor Gutz was the anchorman for the team that was clocked at 48.6. Zach Huwaldt was also second in the shot put with his best-ever mark of 42 ft., 8 in.

Connor Gutz was also fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 57.4 as well as fourth in the 100 meters in 11.7. Brenden Gillespie was fifth in 12.3 and Huwaldt also made the final, but did not place.

Bradee Gubbels took third in the triple jump with a nice leap of 38 ft., 0 in. and Spencer Hille took third in the high jump at 5 ft., 6 in.. Spencer also placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16 ft., 10 in.

For the girls, Cali Gutz was the top medal winner with a second place finish in the 1,600 meters in a time of 6:20.4. Cali was joined by Riley Wagner, Erica Heiman and Grace Gansebom to finish in third place in the 1,600-relay. Their time was 4:54.9.

Grace Gansebom also collected a fourth place medal in the 100 meters and the 200 meters with a time of 14.3 and 29.7, respectively. Riley Wagner earned fourth place in the 800 meters in 3:03.1. The 3,200-relay team also placed fourth in a time of 12:45.9. Team members were Cali Gutz, Kiera Moes, Elisa Herrera and Lexi Beacom.

Erica Heiman finished in fifth place in the 300 hurdles in 60.4. She also places sixth in the 100 hurdles in a time of 20.7. Kiera Moes just missed placing as she was seventh. Grace Gansebom placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 14 ft., 0 in.
