Rivalry game Bears win battle of state-rated teams

LAUREL — There’s an old saying in basketball — shoot until you get hot and then keep on shootin’.

The LCC Bears shot the ball extremely well in racking up three wins last week, highlighted by career-high numbers from two of their senior scorers.

On Thursday, Noah Schutte was simply unstoppable, hitting 12-of-15 from the field and 14-of-16 from the line to put up a career-best 40 points in helping the Bears to a 77-59 win over rival Cedar Catholic.

The Bears got out to an eight-point lead in the first before the visiting Trojans came back to get within five.

Schutte was scoring at will throughout the game, and with Ty Erwin adding 14 points and Evan Haisch putting in 13, the Bears were able to pull away in the fourth quarter to pick up the win.

Evan Schmitt added six points and Cael Hartung put up four in the win. Schutte had a double-double with 14 rebounds and added three assists. Hartung had five boards, Schmitt had five assists and Erwin had three assists.

One night after Schutte’s scoring explosion, Erwin put up a career best of his own with a 32-point performance to help the Bears get past Winnebago 74-64 in a Lewis & Clark Conference road matchup .

The Bears used a 21-11 second-quarter run to take a 39-31 halftime lead and were able to keep the Indians from getting back into the game.

Erwin’s 32 points were followed by 22 from Schutte, 10 from Haisch, eight by Hartung and two from Austin Hall.

Schutte had 13 rebounds and six assists to pace the Bears. Erwin and Hall both had six rebounds and Schmitt had three assists.

In action earlier in the week, the Bears had no problem with Bloomfield, posting a 71-46 victory.

Three LCC players finished in double figures, as Erwin and Haisch shared high honors with 19 points apiece. Schutte had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Hartung added nine, Hall had four and Wilton Roberts put up three. Schmitt recorded seven assists.

The 10-2 Bears played at Wayne Tuesday and will host Creighton Friday before going to Hartington-Newcastle Jan. 21.
