Randolph girls looking for improvement on the track

RANDOLPH — The Randolph Lady Cardinals girls track has been under the guidance of Ted Stubbs for now 22 years and once again the hopes are to see plenty of athletes make a dent on the regional and state scene.

Seniors Ryanne Winkelbauer and Emma Munter, juniors ,Bailey Beal, Jessa Backer, Erin Engel and Brianna Sporleder, sophomores Stella Askey, Jacey Bartels, Nicole Haselhorst, Taylor Mavis, Ella Scott and Malen Vallejo and freshmen Katarina Greiner and Emilee Olson will be entrusted to push the Lady Cardinals forward.

“We placed in the bottom third of the Lewis and Clark Conference, a big and extremely good girls conference,” Stubbs said.

Randolph also was in the bottom third of the districts meet and had one qualifier at state and she graduated.

Beal excelled in the high and long jumps and the 200 meters while Engel and Bartels keyed the throwing events.

Haselhorst and Scott are expected to contribute in the hurdles, while seniors Winkelbauer and Munter have been in track for four years.

“They are dedicated and do what they can to help the team,” Stubbs said. “We just want to get better week by week and compete at a high level, our schedule is loaded with quality, larger schools, so to put an expectation of medals or points is tough to do.”

Randolph’s goals are to work and become better, according to the coach.

“I don’t like to put out team goals in track,” Stubbs said. “We want to be as good as we can be week in and week out. It will be hard for us to score a lot of points in many of our meets just based on the quality of the competition we see everywhere we go.”

Winkelbauer said it was hard to get a good read on the team early in the preseason, but she was encouraged by the numbers of girls out there.

“We will see what comes of it,” Winkelbauer said. “We have a lot of throwers and sprinters, so we should score some points. We get along really well together, and we should see some more improvement since we have some younger kids that are pretty good.”

Winkelbauer will run the 800 and is unsure of what else is in store, but she expects to have a solid season.

“Every year you get a little bit better, more comfortable so hopefully that happens again this year,” Winkelbauer said.
