Puppe leads Bears at Wayne

WAYNE — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge track teams headed to Wayne on April 12 for the Wayne Invitational with the Bears coming away with the runner-up title and the Lady Bears finishing sixth in the seven-team field.

The LCC boys piled up 107 points, just 24 points off of first to Stanton as the Mustangs accumulated 131.33 team points.

The Lady Bears earned 27 points as Wisner-Pilger ran away with the girls’ title with 189 followed by Stanton with 142.

The boys’ team had first-place showings from Daniel Puppe in the 110-meter high hurdles and the pole vault. Puppe also placed second in the 300 intermediate hurdles and ran a leg in the 1,600-meter relay team which placed third.

He was joined on the relay squad by Shane Benson, Carter Kvols and Evan Haisch.

Benson also won the high jump and placed third in the triple jump.

Haisch gathered in third in the 200-meters then added another bronze in the 400 and placed fourth in the shot put.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Landen Leonard, Bradyn Urwiler, Carter Korth and Preston Rose placed second in the event while the 400-meter quartet of Calen Erwin, Ryder Jelinek, Eli Haisch and Dylan Taylor placed fourth.

Kvols led a 2-5-6 finish in the 800 for the Bears as he placed second, Carter Korth was fifth and Leonard was sixth - Rose and Korth  placed fourth and sixth respectively in the open 1,600.

Aaron Bloom used a toss of 113-feet to place third in the discus and Dylan Taylor was just behind Benson in the triple jump, finishing fifth.

Berniece McCorkindale brought home the lone gold medal for the Lady Bears as she heaved the shot 37-feet even to win the event.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge relay teams also made some noise in Wayne with the same girls on the two relays which made it into the top six.

Rachel Rasmussen, Avery Hahne, Julia Johnson and Gabriella Kock got together to place third in the 3,200-meter relay and placed fifth in the 1,600-meter relay.

Mallory Eriksen also had a busy and successful day placing sixth in the 100, sixth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.
