Osmond tops Cards in Holiday Tny. title game

RANDOLPH — The Randolph Cardinals are starting to figure this whole basketball thing out.

Of course there is some sarcasm in that statement considering the success over the years for the program, but this year’s young squad has had to slowly figure things out and they sure did last week when they earned their first win in emphatic fashion, winning 65-25 over Winside in the first round of the Randolph Holiday Tournament.

“We played good pressure defense and got many steals and layups in the first half to take a considerable lead at halftime,” head coach Jim Hixson said. “We continued our strong play in the second half to round out our best game of the year.”

Randolph (1-8) poured in 41 points at halftime to help lead Hixson to his first win as a Randolph head coach.

Collyn Beal, Justin Haselhorst and Tristan Mosel led the way with 17, 15 and 14 points.

In the title game, Randolph took on a solid Osmond team and fell 66-26.

“We had previously played a good Osmond team and we had turnover problems which led to many runouts and layups for Osmond,” Hixson said. “In my estimation we played much better the second time we played them.  We cut our turnovers to half of what we had in the first contest, but our shooting let us down.  We had one of our weakest shooting nights of the year.

“I am very proud of the kids’ efforts in the tournament.  It was great to see them have a little success and take the runner-up title.”

Saturday, the Cardinals fell 50-35 at Elkhorn Valley as Haselhorst’s 17-point effort wasn’t enough.

“We shot 29 percent from the field, with 3-for-22 three-point shooting being our biggest downfall,” Hixson said. “When we are struggling shooting, we need to make a conscious effort to drive the ball and try to get production from the free-throw line.”

Randolph played Homer on Tuesday and will play host to Creighton Thursday.

“To enjoy success next week, we will again need to cut down our turnovers as well as shoot the ball better,” Hixson said. “Since returning from the holiday break, we have struggled shooting the ball.  Again, this week we will concentrate on the fundamentals of handling the ball and shooting, in practice.”

Junior point guard Jacob Calder has continued to improve for the Cardinals and has become one of the team’s better outside shooters when coming off the bench.

He said the win was a big deal for the Cardinals.

“It says we are going in the right direction with future games and we just have to keep going,” Calder said. “It boosted our confidence a lot. I am starting to shoot more in practice and in games. My teammates have been telling me to shoot the ball more.

“It’s the fact I contribute more to the offense and can score a little more. I figure if I throw up a few more shots some of them will go down.”
