Osmond offense runs by Cards

OSMOND — It was not an ideal result for the Randolph football team last week at Osmond.

A 30-6 second quarter by the hosts broke open an 8-all tie after 12 minutes to put Osmond up 38-14 at the break and it used that momentum to cruise to a 58-20 win.

Randolph (1-4, 0-2) will now host Winside (3-2) 7 p.m. Friday.

But first, it’s time to clean up some things after the Osmond loss.

“The game against Osmond was a game of turnovers and big plays,” Cardinals head coach Mark Lech said. “We could move the ball, but just had too many turnovers. Osmond took advantage of those turnovers and were able to hit with some big throws down the field to get the score out of reach.

The turning point was late in the second quarter, just before half, when we committed two turnovers and Osmond was able to get three quick scores. We played strong for two of the four quarters but were unable to put together a full game.”

Justin Haselhorst ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries, Tristan Mosel caught four passes for 77 yards and a score and quarterback Tyson Junck went 7-for-10 for 69 yards. Haselhorst threw five passes, completing three, including the touchdown strike to Mosel.

But seven turnovers were way too many.

That needs to be fixed as Winside comes to town.

“Winside is coming off of a win and looks to continue their momentum,” Lech said. “Winside’s strength is in their running back, who can make people miss or run with power. They have an aggressive group that comes after the ball hard on defense. It will be a challenge for the Cardinals to beat Winside if they don’t play consistent for four quarters.

“We will be working on cutting down on turnovers and trying to create more of our own. We had strong line play last week especially on defense and I think this is an area that we can use to our advantage going forward. The younger players have now played a lot of football and look to be more comfortable in the schemes. We need to transition that play into wins on the field.”

One of those linemen – senior Cadein Villwok – has made it a career of filling in holes along the line.

“He has played multiple positions for us over the years and this year included,” Lech said. “He is always willing to go where the coaches need him and has been invaluable this year in the trenches taking on the opposing linemen.

“Cadein has had to transition from lineman to running back on offense and from lineman to linebacker on defense in a moment’s notice and that versatility has allowed the team to run a lot of different schemes.”

Villwok says he has probably played half of the defensive and offensive positions.

“It’s so tough because one week I could be learning another position and the next week I may have to forget everything learned the past week to learn something different,” Villwok said. “Wherever coach needs me I just try to learn that position and play the best I can.

“It’s just about repetition and playing it again and again to where it gets in my brain and learn what I have to do. It’s hard to perfect something but I have to learn pretty quick. I am just able to retain information quickly.”

Physically, Villwok said no matter what spot he is at he “plays as hard as he can,” and it doesn’t affect him that much.

“I just love the team aspect of football and being able to trust your teammates and try to make a family,” Villwok said.

The family is hoping to bounce back from the Osmond loss.

“We have to keep our spirits high and get back to practice,” he said. “If we had played great, we could have won and if we didn’t play good it would turn out similar to that.”
