Osmond Junior High Lady Tigers are second in tourney; split Wausa games

The Osmond junior high girls’ basketball team has been very busy, participating in the “O” Club Junior High Basketball Tournament in January and then competing in a double-header against Wausa recently.

WAUSA — The Osmond Tiger junior high girls’ basketball team earned second place at the annual “O” Club Junior High Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 16. This year, the tournament was held in Wausa thanks to a flip- flop with the Wausa Invitational Speech Meet that was held in Osmond this year thanks to ongoing construction at Wausa High School. “Overall, I am really proud of our girls,” Coach Scott Morrison said. “We went a long time between winning games, but our girls have been patient and have kept working to improve.” The Lady Tigers won the tourna- ment’s rst game versus Randolph 26-6. They had a dynamic first quar- ter, scoring 15 of their 26 points. Sophie scored four points in the rst quarter. Keli Aschoff, Anna Kahny, Caydence Krienert, Belle Vinson and Erin Wagner all scored in the first quarter as well. “After a minute or two of adjust- ing to the rhythm of the game, our girls did a nice job being aggres- sive,” Coach Morrison said. The Tigers scored only two points in the second quarter and three points in the third quarter. This included a second quarter basket by Vinson and three points by Tessa Gardner. In the fourth quarter, Gardner added to the Tigers’ lead by hitting two free-throws. Wagner also scored two points. Vinson, Gardner and Krienert all did well on the glass. Vinson and Gardner each had seven rebounds, while Krienert had six. Keli Aschoff and Julianna Kumm each had six steals; Sophie Gansebom added four assists. Callie Hoffman worked hard on the block throughout the game. She has improved drastically thoughout the year. Brianna Kumm had a steal and an assist. She is visibly improv- ing and becoming more confident. Jamie Gubbels did a nice job; she played the most she has all year and visibly looked like she was enjoy- ing herself. “Keely Gubbels was absent, but we know how much work she’s put in and what she means to the team,” Morrison said. Osmond15226=26 Randolph0006=6 The young Lady Tigers lost in the championship round 30-10 to the Plainview Lady Pirates. Despite a valiant effort, the Tigers weren’t able to overcome the Pirates’ ag- gressiveness, size and ability. The Lady Tigers found them- selves down 15-2 at the end of the rst quarter, but they really bounced back defensively, holding the Pirates scoreless in the second quarter. “Going into halftime, we felt like we would have a chance to make a few adjustments and rally,” Morrison said. The Tigers had a dif cult time, though, handling the renewed ef- fort by the Pirates, who outscored Osmond 15-4 in the second half. “Probably the biggest improve- ment I’d like to see the girls make before they move on to high school is for them to run a full-court man to put pressure on the other team, and nd ways to create opportunities that way,” Morrison said. Belle Vinson had a nice game; she had eight of the Tigers’ 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. “Belle has been a great all year; she is extremely physical and men- tally tough,” Morrison said. Keli Aschoff scored the Tigers’ other two points. She had a couple steals. Rebounding seem to be one of the Tigers strengths, especially from a statistical vantage point. Caydence Krienert had six re- bounds, Tessa Gardener and Erin Wagner each added ve, Callie Hoffman and Julianna Kumm each had four. Brianna Kumm added three. Sophie Gansebom did a nice job controlling the basketball at times. She’s at her best when she’s ag- gressive going to the hoop. Anna Kahny had two steals. Jamie Gubbels also got in and moved up and down the court. The Tigers will move on to play in a couple club tournaments; they start at Elkhorn Valley on Sunday, March 1, and then they play on Sunday, March 8, in the Plainview tournament. Osmond 2 4 2 4 = 15 Plainview 15 0 7 8 = 30

Keli Aschoff, who hit a free-throw, was the lone scorer for the Tigers. The Tigers posted another great run in the fourth, and they whittled the lead down to ve in the last minute of the game. “I was really proud of our girls’ effort during their run,” Morrison said. “We’ve got to nd ways to make the run last through the who ball game. To me, we seem to have a recurring theme for the season: When we’re aggressive and we hustle, we play well.” The young Lady Tigers hit eight of 11 free-throws in the fourth quarter, their most impressive stretch of the season so far. Krienert was four-for-four. Belle Vinson hit three-of-four. Sophie Gansebom made one. Krienert scored seven points, eight rebounds and three steals.
