Osmond competes at Winside invitational

WINSIDE — The Osmond wrestling team competed in the 51st Winside invitational on Saturday, Jan. 11.  The Tigers scored 29 team points and finished in 12th out of the 14 teams competing. Battle Creek was the team champion with 108.0 points, followed by Pender and Quad County Northeast.

The Tigers had one individual place winner with Octavio Palacios placing third at 113 lbs.

Octavio was able to make it down to the 113 lbs. weight class for the first time all year. He then took advantage of a smaller bracket to pick up his first varsity medal. He wrestled in three matches on the day, losing a couple close matches before picking up the win that sent him in to third place.

“Octavio really rose to the challenge this last week,” said Coach Eli Neitzel. “He was able to stay focused as he not only continued to improve, but to also lose weight to get to 113. He does not have a lot to lose in terms of body fat so I know it was difficult for him. He was then able to come out and wrestle aggressive and picked up his first varsity medal.”

Also wrestling for Osmond were Robert Aschoff at 106 lbs., Hunter Beacom at 120 lbs., Bodie True at 138 lbs. and Patrick Vinson at 145 lbs.

“Our other wrestlers all wrestled a tough tournament,” Neitzel said. “Everyone was right there. When it came down to the end, we had three guys finish fifth, with us dropping a couple of matches that we feel we should have won. We have another big week for us coming up so I hope we can come back to practice on Monday and fix some of the mistakes and continue to improve.”

Next action for the Tigers was scheduled for Tuesday Jan. 14, when the Tigers hosted a home triangular with St. Mary’s and North Central starting at 6:30 p.m. Then again Friday, Jan. 17, when they travel to Weeping Water for the Weeping Water invitational.  Wrestling begins at 2 p.m.
