OHS track teams compete at WSC

WAYNE — On Friday, March 19, the Osmond High School track teams traveled to Wayne State College for their annual indoor meet, but this year, because of COVID-19, the meet was held outdoors. The weather was a cool 55 degrees, but the sunshine really helped.

The Tigers had a number of nice performances versus larger schools. Senior Graysen Schultze took runnerup honors in the triple jump at 40 ft., 1 in. by ½ inch behind Arens of Stanton. He also placed fourth in the 1,600 meters in a nice time of 5:06.07.

Johnson Chishiba was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:13.71. Ryan Schmit just missed placing as he came in seventh in 2:23.56. Zach Huwaldt also placed fourth in the shot put with a strong toss of 40 ft., 8.5 in. Freshman Spencer Hille placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 5 ft., 8 in. and had a nice attempt at 5 ft., 10 in.

For the girls, Grace Gansebom cruised to a fourth place finish in the 200 meters in 29.28. She also had a nice mark in the long jump, placing fifth at 15 ft., .5 in. Kiera Moes just missed placing as her mark of 14 ft., 9 in. was seventh.

Cali Gutz had a solid race in the 1,600 meters as she hit the final turn in third place, but could not hold off Fehringer of Columbus Scotus and placed fourth in 6:18.51.

Osmond placed two relay teams on the boys’ side. The 3,200-relay team of Chishiba, Schmit, Karter Johnson and Schultze placed second behind Homer in a time of 9:16.9.

The 1,600-relay team of Bodie True, Chishiba, Schultze, and Connor Gutz finished in third place behind Stanton and Boone Central. Their time was a solid 3:45.08.

“We really had a good opening day,” noted Coach Joe Ortmeier. “It was great getting back on a track and we competed well. We need better weather for conditioning and technique work.”

Teams in the meet were Boone Central, Columbus Scotus, Norfolk Catholic, Osmond, Stanton, Summerland, Tekamah-Herman, Wayne, West Holt, Chambers-Wheeler Central, Hinton and Homer.
