Boys conference runner-up, champs at Winch; girls eighth in conference, fifth at Winch

The track and field teams competed in the conference meet and the Winch invitational during the past week.

Conference Meet

HARTINGTON — Saturday, May 1, was the Lewis & Clark conference meet at the Hartington Sports Complex. Sixteen teams take part in this wide-spread conference. The Tigers were runner-up to Wakefield, 118 to 81. The girls finished eighth, behind Wynot with Wausa the conference champions.

The temperature hit 92 by the middle of the day, with gusty winds which were tough for all the athletes. Osmond did record two first-place finishes on the day. The 3,200-relay team took the lead early and was never threatened. Team members were Johnson Chishiba, Ryan Schmit, Karter Johnson and Graysen Schultze and their time was 9:10.27.

The other gold came in the 1,600 meters where Graysen and Johnson both out-kicked Homer's Grant Landers in the last straight for the win. Graysen’s time was 5:05.84 and Johnson’s was 5:06.23.

Johnson earlier was second in the 800 meters to Homer’s Carson Gaarder. Johnson’s time was 2:15.43. Ryan Schmit ran a great 800-meter race, finishing fifth in 2:19.77.

Cali Gutz had the best finish for the girls as she was second in the 1,600 meters. Cali led the race early before Wausa’s Darla Nelson took the lead and held it to the end. Cali’s time was 6:09.85 and the winning time was 6:02.84.

The girls' 3,200-relay team collected third place in a time of 11:51.00. Team members were Gutz, Riley Wagner, Elisa Herrera and anchor Lexi Beacom. The 1,600-relay team finished in fourth place as Wagner, Erica Heiman, Grace Gansebom, and Gutz were timed at 4:40.39. The 1,600-relay team of Connor

In the 110 high hurdles, Kaden Polt had his best day of the season, clipping off nearly a second and a half, placing fourth in a nice time of 16.76. He also ran a good 300 hurdle race where he finished in fourth place in 45.52. Hille was right behind in fifth place in a time of 46.16.

Also placing fourth was the 400-relay team. Gutz, Bryan Solorzano, Bradee Gubbels and Zach Huwaldt covered the distance in 47.09, their best time of the season.

Elisa Herrera ran her fastest 800 meters as she finished in fifth place in a time of 5:51.45. Kiera Moes also placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 30 ft., 10 in. Grace Gansebom placed sixth in the long jump at 15 ft., 8 in., and finished sixth in the 200 meters in a time of 28.46 after a very fast prelim time of 27.88. Also placing for the Tigers was Schultze, fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 39 ft., 3 in. Huwaldt was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 42 ft., 5in., Gubbels finishing eighth in the long jump with a jump of 18 ft., 6.5 in.

Owen Seversen performed well, clearing his personal best by four inches in the high jump. He placed eighth at 5 ft., 6 in. Gutz also placed eighth in the 400 meters in a time of 56.02.

“The kids did a great job of dealing with the heat and wind. Even though some of the times were not what they wanted, they really competed,” complimented Coach Joe Ortmeier. “Congratulations to our guys for being conference runner-up. That’s impressive in the Lewis & Clark Conference!”

Winch Invitational

LAUREL — On Thursday, May 6, the Osmond track and field teams traveled to the Laurel track facility for the Jim Winch invitational. The boys outscored the host team Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears 129 to 112. The girls scored 43 points for a fifth-place finish behind Plainview’s 88 points.

Senior Connor Gutz took first place in the 100 meters in a time of 11.9 and fellow senior Zach Huwaldt was fifth at 12.3. Zach also finished fifth in the 200 meters in 25.3.

Osmond placed two runners in the 400 meters as Gutz and Bodie True placed fourth and fifth in times of 54.8 and 55.0, respectively.

Three Tigers placed in the 800 meters. Johnson Chishiba was picked second in a tight finish to Schroeder from Wynot. Winning time was 2:10.3 and Johnson’s time was 2:10.4. Ryan Schmit came in third at 2:13.5 and Hudson Schultze was sixth in a time of 2:21.3. In the 1,600 meters, Graysen Schul

In the 1,600 meters, Graysen Schultze finished second to Smith of Wausa. Graysen’s time was 4:53.9. Chishiba was third at 4:54.9.

Kaden Polt placed fifth in the 110 high hurdles in a time of 17.2. Spencer Hille led a trio of three Tigers in the 300 hurdles. Spencer was third (44.4), Polt fourth (44.6), and Owen Severson, fifth (47.1).

In the field events, two Osmond jumpers placed in the long jump. Bradee Gubbels had his best leap ever at 19 ft., .5 in. for second place, just .25 in. from the winner. Hille was fourth at 18 ft., 4.75 in. Graysen Schultze won the triple jump with a mark of 39 ft., 4 in. and Gubbels was fourth at 38 ft., 1 in. Huwaldt won the shot put at 41 ft., 11 in. and Patrick Vinson placed fifth in the discus with his best toss of 102 ft., 6 in.

The 400-relay team of Gutz, Bryan Solorzano, Gubbels, and Huwaldt placed fourth at 47.5. The 1,600-relay team of Gutz, Chishiba, Hille and Graysen Schultze won the event in 3:41.4.

The 3,200-relay team of Chishiba, Ryan Schmit, Karter Johnson and Schultze won the race in a time of 8:51.3. The Tiger throwers relay came in third in a time of 57.0. Team members were Patrick Vinson, Kaysen Maertins, Xander Brown and Zach Reikofski.

Grace Gansebom finished in fourth place in the 100 meters in a time of 13.7 and finished fifth in the 200 meters in 28.4. Elisa Herrera took sixth place in the 800 meters in a time of 2:50.6. Cali Gutz finished in third place in the 1600 meters in 5:54.3.

Erica Heiman took fifth place in both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Her time in the 100 hurdles was 18.5, and in the 300 hurdles, 52.8, which was her fastest time ever. Grace Gansebom placed fourth in

All the girls relay teams placed. The 400-relay team of Heiman, Herrera, Riley Wagner and Lexi Beacom placed fourth in 57.6. The 1,600-relay team of Wagner, Heiman, Grace Gansebom and Gutz finished in fourth place in 4:43.7.

The 3,200-relay team took third place in 11:51.7. Team members were Gutz, Wagner, Herrera and Beacom. The girls' throwers relay finished in fourth place in a time of 68.5. Running for the throwers were Lillie Gansebom, Molly Beacom-Timmerman, Anna Kahny and Macy Aschoff.

“The weather finally cooperated for a nice day and the times and distances responded,” noted Coach Joe Ortmeier. “This is always a good tune-up meet before districts next week!”
