LCC girls take conference runner-up honors
LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge volleyball team claimed runner-up honors in the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament, falling to Ponca in four sets in the championship game on Tuesday.
Last Monday, the Lady Bears hosted the quarterfinals and semifinals, defeating Randolph (25-20, 25-11) and Winside (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) to advance to the championship game.
In the win over Randolph, Erica Wolfgram had eight kills, Kinsey Hall had seven and Mollie Schutte and Berniece McCorkindale each had three. Haley Christensen had 15 assists an Hall had six. Christensen, Hall and McCorkindale each had two ace serves. Defensively, Hall had 11 digs, Wolfgram had six, McCorkindale and Christensen both had five.
Against Winside, Wolfgram had 12 kills, McCorkindale added 11, Hall had six and Benson had five. Christensen had 20 assists and Hall had 13. Christensen, Wolfgram and McCorkindale each had two ace serves. Wolfgram had 18 digs, Urwiler had 13 and Hall and Cassie Granquist had 10 apiece.
The Lady Bears won an exciting second set to tie the match early on, but Ponca was able to take control in the final two sets to come away with the win, 25-15, 25-27, 25-21, 25-21 in the best-of-five championship final.
Hall had 15 kills and Mollie Schutte added 13 to lead the LCC attack. Benson added nine kills and McCorkindale had seven. Christensen and Hall both had 20 assists. Defensively, Urwiler had 23 digs, Christensen had 17, Granquist added nine and Hall, Wolfgram and McCorkindale each had eight. Erica Benson posted seven digs as well.
LCC played in SubDistrict action this week. Subdistrict winners and four wild cards advance to Saturday’s district finals.
