LCC Bears claim Creighton crown

CREIGHTON — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge track teams traveled west for the Creighton Invitational last week with the Bears coming away with the team title and the Lady Bears placing third in the team races for each division.

Final team results were not available. The Bears swept to the team title with a few different varieties of “sweeps”.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge swept the relays, swept the hurdles and swept the distance races.

The 400 relay team of Daniel Puppe, Markus Martin, Wilton Roberts and Deagan Puppe circled the track one in 46.8 seconds for the win.

The 1,600 squad of Wilton Roberts, Lucas Rasmussen, Martin and Evan Haisch circled the track four times in 3:52.7 for the win.

The 3,200 team of Carter Kvols, Landon Leonard, Carter Korth and Preston Rose circled the track eight times in 9:26.1 for the win.

Daniel Puppe swept the 110 high hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

And Tyler and Dillon Olson traded places in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs with Dillon winning the 1,600 and Tyler taking gold in the 3,200. Each placed second in the other distance after winning the aforementioned races.

Haisch came close in the shot put with a silver by less than a foot and Shane Benson was second in the high jump after clearing 5-feet-10-inches but got nudged to silver by misses at earlier heights.

For the Lady Bears, Tali Erwin had a productive day gathering a gold in the high jump, a second in the 100-meter hurdles, a sixth in the long jump and ran a leg in the third-place Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 400 meter relay.

Berniece McCorkindale and Reggan Kuhlman split the gold medals in the throws with McCorkindale winning the shot and Kuhlman taking the crown in the discus.

Mallory Eriksen was third in the long jump, fourth in the 100 and ran a leg in the 400 relay with Erwin, Ella Hartung and Avery Hahne.

Rachel Rasmussen was third in the open 400 and Josilyn Martin was third in the 3,200-meter run.

Hartung was sixth in the 200 and the 1,600 rela team of Chelsea Potts, Ryleigh Specht, Julia Johnson and Gabby Kock placed fourth along with the 3,200 team which included Rasmussen, Martin, Johnson and Kock.

Julia Johnson also placed third in the pole vault. The Bears and Lady Bears were set to travel to Winnebago for the Lewis & Clark Conference Meet Tuesday, May 3. The meet was scheduled for April 30 but the weather prevented the competition that day.

Both teams are preparing for the District Meet May 12 at the Hartington Community Complex.
