Lady Vikes edge past Plainview for first win

WAUSA — The Wausa Lady Vikings opened the new sports season Friday on a high note.

The Lady Vikes edged Plainview, 33-30, to pick up their first win of the season right out of the gate.

The Purple and Gold didn’t fare quite so well when they hit the road Saturday to take on Boyd County, falling 53-29.

Plainview and Wausa played evenly throughout the first three quarters. Wausa led, 16-13, at the halftime break, but Plainview erased the deficit in the third quarter to knot the score at 21-21 heading into the final frame.

The Lady Vikes hit their shots when they counted and were able to outscore the Lady Pirates 12-9 in the final frame to earn the win.

Esther Nelson paced the offense against Plainview, by hitting 50 percent of her field goal shots and dropping in a total of 13 points.

Abby Keiser posed a threat from long distance, connecting on 2-6 from long distance, and finishing the night with six points.

Nelson also dominated the boards, pulling down nine rebounds on the night. Her quick hands and solid defensive pressure also earned her a team-high five steals.

Boyd County took control of the contest early and never looked back, building a 27-11 halftime lead en route to a 53-29 win over the Lady Vikes.

Claire Schindler had the hot hand for Wausa, leading the team with 12 points.

Esther Nelson once again led the team on the boards with six rebounds.

The Lady Vikes will be in action again Dec. 15, at Elgin/ Pope John.
