Lady Vikes earn split during busy week on the court

Wausa — It was a hit and miss week for the Wausa Lady Vikings last week as they went 3-3 on the volleyball court.

Wausa defeated Osmond 3-0 (25-8, 25- 21, 25-21) and then lost 2-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-13) to Chambers Wheeler Central and 2-0 (25-23, 25-21) to Elgin/Pope John during the week before heading to the Hartington-Newcastle tournament where they lost 2-0 (26-24, 25-21) to the hosts and then won 2-0 over North Central and 2-1 against Winside.

Wausa is now 11-6 as the regular season winds down and the Lewis and Clark Tourney and SubDistricts loom.

“I feel very good about our team at this point in the season because we have been able to win with everyone, meaning that our depth has really paid off in terms of if someone is struggling we have players coming off the bench and getting the job done,” Wausa head coach Greg Conn said. “That was very evident in the Hartington-Newcastle tournament and I would expect nothing less in the next two weeks. It’s just like having a great bullpen to get you through down the stretch and we have a good one.”

One of those players is senior Charlie Price.

Price started the season in the top rotations but lost her spot. That hasn’t deterred her from being a key member of that bullpen.

“She came off the bench (at HNHS) and lit it up hitting and played a great back row and gave us that spark we needed,” Conn said. “Cool thing about this was that she lost her starting position but stayed positive and worked hard through this time and it paid off for our team and Charlie as well.”

Price felt she played well and a lot of that stems from having the ideal attitude of a teammate.

“I lost my starting position, but I knew that if I had a bad attitude about the whole situation that I wasn’t going to go anywhere,” Price said. “So, I kept working hard and kept a positive attitude on the bench. When I was here, I kept a positive attitude on the court and I just played well.

“The sets were on and Clara (Schindler) works her butt off to get the ball off wherever she is so that the hitters can hit and just destroy the ball. I think Clara did such a good job today.”

Against Elgin/Pope John, freshman Hunter West had five kills while Brooke Kumm and Alexa Cunningham added four kills a piece.

In the sweep over Osmond Morgan Kleinschmit (eight kills, 14 digs) and Schindler (19 digs) led the Lady Vikings. Against CWC, Kleinschmit added five kills while West contributed four kills.

This week will be daunting for the Lady Vikings as they began it with the Knox County Tournament and then host stateranked rivals Wynot Thursday evening.

“Wynot is one of the top 10 teams in Class D and we know that will be a battle we look forward to and this year will be no different,” Conn said. “we have been fortunate to not have lost any players to quarantine but the pressure is really growing now that we are getting closer to the conference tournament and the Sub-District Tournament.”

The Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament is set to begin Monday.

Price admits that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed peoples’ outlook on life and what they view as adverse compared to what might have been before it.

“With things being so hard this year, I don’t want to have a bad attitude this year,” Price said. “We have been able to play this much with COVID. It’s changed all of our perspectives on everything.

“I probably would have had a worse attitude about the situation, but it is also better because we have bonded so much more as a team this year.”
