Lady Tigers wrap up volleyball season with tournaments

The Osmond Lady Tiger volleyball team was very busy the past couple of weeks, with the Pierce County tournament on Oct. 15, conference games Oct. 17-19 and subdistricts on Oct. 26. Coach Tiffany Rice provided the following accounts of those competitions.

Pierce County Tournament

RANDOLPH — On Thursday, Oct. 15, the Lady Tigers traveled to Randolph for the annual Pierce County Tournament. The towns participating in the tournament include Osmond, Pierce, Plainview and Randolph.

To start off the night for the Lady Tigers, they took on the Pierce Lady Bluejays. The Lady Tigers matched well against the Bluejays, but were at a height disadvantage, which allowed for Pierce to put a block up against Osmond's aggressive hitters, limiting the Lady Tigers' ability to tally up kills.

The Lady Tigers fought hard against the Bluejays, but came up short, losing in two sets with scores of 20-25 and 16-25. Individual stats from this game are as follows: Macy Aschoff: 6 kills, 2 digs; Grace Gansebom: 2 kills, 10 assists, 6 digs; Kiera Moes: 2 kills, 1 assist, 3 digs; Lillie Gansebom: 3 aces, 2 digs; Bailey Schmit: 1 ace, 1 kill, 2 assists, 2 digs; Elisa Herrera: 5 digs; Cali Gutz: 4 kills.

Subdistrict Tournament

HUMPHREY — On Monday, Oct. 26, the Lady Tigers traveled to Humphrey for the 2020 Class D1-3 Subdistrict Volleyball Tournament. In Osmond's subdistrict were the following teams: Osmond, Plainview, Tri-County Northeast, Wausa and Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family.

Starting off the tournament, the Lady Tigers battled the Plainview Lady Pirates. Going into this game, the Lady Tigers knew that they were going to have to come out strong and play like they had not beaten this team previously. Plainview was out to win and Osmond had to be stronger physically and mentally to win this game.

The Lady Tigers fought hard for five sets, winning three sets to two with scores of 25-18 (O), 21-25 (P), 25-20 (O), 20-25 (P), 15-10 (O). The Lady Tigers played very well in every aspect of volleyball. The Lady Tigers tallied 96 digs, 15 ace serves and 52 assists which was double the amount of assists that the Lady Pirates put up.

The individual stats from this game are as follows: Macy Aschoff: 3 aces, 6 kills, 1 assist, 22 digs; Kiera Moes: 3 aces, 12 kills, 1 solo block, 7 digs; Grace Gansebom: 6 aces, 3 kills, 47 assists, 14 digs; Lillie Gansebom: 2 aces, 4 kills, 5 digs; Bailey Schmit: 16 kills, 1 assist, 25 digs; Elisa Herrera: 1 ace, 2 assists, 19 digs; Leia Buchanan: 1 dig.

With the win against the Lady Pirates, the Lady Tigers continued on in the subdistrict tournament. Later the same evening, the Lady Tigers went head-to-head with Humphrey-Lindsey Holy Family. Humphrey-Lindsey Holy Family brought a lot of tough competition to the court that included height and strength.

Starting this game, the Lady Tigers were intimidated by the height, but were reassured that height is not everything, rather it's how you play the game. With that advice in mind, the Lady Tigers were encouraged to play their game, and let the mistakes go.

Starting the third set, having lost the first two sets, the Lady Tigers were told to play this set like they want to remember their season. With that advice in mind, the Lady Tigers came out strong and played very well against Humphrey-Lindsey Holy Family.

Osmond, unfortunately, came up short in this game, losing in three sets with scores of 15-25, 7-25, 21-25, which ended the 2020 Lady Tiger volleyball season. During this match, the Lady Tigers put up 57 digs, which was impressive to see as the opponent hitters were very good.

"As the volleyball season ends, I could not be more proud of the Osmond Lady Tigers for the progress that they made throughout the season, despite obstacles of COVID-19, coaching changes, and a challenging schedule," Coach Rice said. "When diversity and challenges can be overcome, each individual betters themselves, which then betters the team, and the Lady Tigers proved that this season."
