Lady Tigers have week of tough games

There was no shortage of games in the last five days for the OHS Lady Tigers. First, they had a very tough home game with Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (LCC) and a pair of road games. Then they had Niobrara-Verdigre in Niobrara, and Wakefield-Allen in Ponca. Not a lot of time to prepare for any one team, but the young Lady Tigers played hard and put in a good effort.

LCC Game

In the LCC game, Macy Aschoff, Kiera Moes, Bailey Schmit, Maddy Huwaldt, Leia Buchanan and Grace Gansebom scored for OHS. LCC won this game 57-24, dropping the Lady Tigers’ record to 8-7

Leading rebounders in this game were Macy, Maddy and Kiera with eight, six and five, respectively. Mary and Grace led in steals with four and three.

“On the road at Niobrara, we started out strong, but I think our legs got worn out towards the end of this one,” Coach Terry Viterna said. “Going into half-time, we had a 22-18 lead. Niobrara-Verdigre was able to get the lead on us, right at the end of the third quarter, 31-30. Our inside shots and free throws just wouldn’t drop in the last quarter, as N-V went on to win 44-35.

Elisa Herrera and Kiera took over the point guard duties as Grace was unable to make the trip because of illness. Kiera led the team in scoring with 19 points.

Mary, Macy and Maddy accounted for the other points. Elisa had a big night on the boards and in stealing the ball. She had four rebounds, three steals, and four deflections. Macy, Mary and Kiera led in rebounding with 12,11 and eight.

Lewis and Clark Conference

First round play in the Lewis-Clark Tournament put Osmond on the road to Ponca and matched the Lady Tigers up with a very talented Wakefield-Allen team, which won the game 57-39.

“The Tigers played very, very hard in this game,” said Coach Viterna. “There was no lack of effort from anyone. Parents and fans should be proud of these young ladies as they work hard in practice and in games, and represent the school and town with PRIDE.”

Top point getter was Kiera with 17, also grabbing the ball with four steals and four rebounds. Leading in rebounds were Macy with 11, followed by Mary with six.

This was a great effort by the entire team. Osmond’s record now stands at 10-7, with hopes of getting some more wins in the very near future.

Junior Varsity Action

In junior varsity play against L-C-C, the girls pulled out a hard-fought win by a two-quarter score of 16-14.

Leading the team in scoring were Leia Buchannan and Bailey Schmit with five and four points, respectively.

Elisa Herrera led the team in steals and assists, while Riley Wagner led OHS in rebounding.

Next up was Niobrara-Verdigre as they defeated the Osmond junior varsity 16-12 in another two-quarter game.

Cali Gutz led in scoring with four points and five steals. Cali also had four boards to her credit. Riley led in rebounding with six. Leia had two blocked shots against them.

Other team members include Lexi Beacom, Bailey Schmit and Reese Johns. ALL of these Lady Tigers play important roles on the team.

The JV record now stands at 6-4.
