OSMOND — The Lady Tigers began the season at home against the Lady Cardinals of Randolph on Friday, Dec. 4. Osmond started out on an 8-0 run to begin the game which provided the type of spark that a first game needs.

Throughout the game, Osmond’s defensive effort was fairly good, accumulating 34 rebounds to Randolph’s 32 and forcing 26 turnovers. However, what proved to be the difference in the game was the Lady Tigers’ own mistakes and settling for shots.

“It’s tough to win games when you shoot 27% and commit 26 turnovers,” said Coach David Schmit. “However, I am proud of the girls’ resiliency and fight throughout the entire game. We’re by no means a finished product and owe it to ourselves to have some highly competitive practices going forward to get things turned in the right direction.”

The Lady Tigers were led in points by Cali Gutz (16), Grace Gansebom (9), and Macy Aschoff (8). Leading rebounders for the night were Macy Aschoff and Kiera Moes with 8 each and Grace Gansebom with 7.

HARTINGTON — With a quick turnaround between games, the Lady Tigers took to the road to face the Lady Wildcats of Hartington-Newcastle on Saturday, Dec. 5. “We knew coming into the game

“We knew coming into the game that they had a very talented sophomore guard and a good post that we’d have to contain and for most of the night we held them in check,” Coach Schmit said. “Unfortunately, one trend continued over from the Randolph game and that was the turnover bug. As a team, we committed 30 turnovers and when you have that many, it makes it very challenging to overcome.

“One big emphasis for us was to get our posts more touches and while we did get it into the post a few more times than we did against Randolph, it still needs to increase. Macy Aschoff, who is also a captain for us, is an experienced post who we need to feed the ball to. We’re at our best when we’re playing off of and through the post.”

The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Grace Gansebom (9) and Kiera Moes (8). Leading rebounders for the game were Macy Aschoff with 13 and Grace Gansebom and Elisa Herrera, both with 7, which contributed to a team total and season high of 41 rebounds.

“Over the off season, we made some changes to our offense, defense, and overall culture and part of what we’re experiencing now are some growing pains through that,” Schmit continued. “However, this group of girls is a very driven and competitive group and I have no doubt that we’ll overcome the adversity in front of us and be better because of it.

“Thank you to all who have supported us in person and watching online,” Coach Schmit said. “We’re very appreciative!”

JV Loses in Overtime

The junior varsity’s game was an overtime loss to Hartington-Newcastle on December 5, 17-20. This away game was a battle from the tip and the girls competed well. Cali Gutz again led the team in points, while only playing one quarter, with five. There were two (Belle Vinson, Tessa Gardner) with four points. Bailey Schmit also contributed heavily as point guard and a source of control.
