Lady Tigers fall in second round of subdistrict action

The Osmond Lady Tigers defeated Wausa in the first round of subdistricts before falling to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in Round 2.

Osmond vs. Wausa

The Lady Tigers began subdistrict play on Monday, Feb. 15, as the No. 4 seed and took on the No. 5 seed, the Lady Vikings of Wausa. Having just played three days prior, it was a quick turnaround for both teams.

The first half eerily resembled the first half of the regular season game with Osmond’s offense getting quality shots just not having the shots go down.

There were a few times where the Lady Tigers weren’t getting back in transition quick enough, leading to Wausa shots where it felt like if Osmond didn’t get a stop soon, it’d be a tough comeback.

However, in what should be no shock to anyone, the Osmond girls clamped down on defense and made a late second quarter run to go into halftime down four (20-16). It’s tough to go into halftime with the only thing to fix being the ability to get shots to fall, but that’s really all it was.

Osmond came out in the second half and really began to gain momentum starting with the defense and leading to some quick buckets. Osmond’s defensive pressure and ability to convert turnovers to points made all the difference.

The third quarter did come with some adversity, however. As Grace Gansebom went to pressure the ball handler on a trap, she was caught with an errant elbow to the mouth which knocked out a tooth.

While this injury would have kept many players out for the remainder of the game, she was not about to let the mishap end her night. She responded well hitting a three-pointer at the beginning of the fourth quarter to help Osmond begin to put the game away.

“I was really proud of the way our team rallied around her and each other during the entire second half,” said Coach David Schmit. “We didn’t quite have our normal shooting night, but we did enough to secure a hardfought win!

“It’s quite the challenge to play the same team twice within a four-day span and to win both games is even tougher,” he said. “I’m very proud of our whole team in persevering through a game like this. It shows exactly what our girls are made of and what we can do even on a tough shooting night like tonight.”

The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Vikings 45-40. Leading scorers for the Lady Tigers were Macy Aschoff with 13 and Grace Gansebom with 10. Leading the rebounding category was Macy Aschoff with 13 and Kiera Moes with nine. With 13 points and 13 rebounds, Macy records her first double-double of the season!

Osmond vs. Humphrey/LHF

The Lady Tigers returned to Humphrey High School on Tuesday, Feb. 16, to take on the hosts, the Lady Bulldogs of Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family. HLHF came into the game ranked as the No. 2 team according to the Omaha World Herald in Class Dl.

The tone was set real early in the game by the Lady Bulldogs as they raced out to a 48-14 first-half lead. The remainder of the game, the Lady Bulldogs continued to have control, winning it by a final of 69-25.

“Though the score is what it is, this game showed us where the bar is to be a great, dominating team,” commented Coach Schmit. “Our goal will always be to compete each game and put ourselves in a position to win and to do so consistently. We know that putting in the work each day is important. I’m very proud of our girls for their season as a whole and the hard work and dedication that they displayed. We will miss our seniors next season, but also look forward to those joining us next year. I would like to thank our student-athletes first and foremost, our student managers, the administration, and our parents and fans for all your hard work and support throughout the year.”
