Lady Tigers fall in close games

The Osmond Lady Tigers battled in two games during the past week and fell in close games against Wynot and Creighton

Wynot 48, Osmond 41

After having the game postponed because of forecasted weather conditions, the Lady Tigers took to the court again on Monday, Dec. 13, to face perennial power, the Wynot Lady Blue Devils. The Lady Tigers had put in a lot of preparation in the days prior, knowing the quality of game they’d have to play to hang in there and give themselves a chance at the end.

The game was virtually neck-and-neck the entire first half, which saw the Lady Tigers trailing by only 3 going into halftime, 26-23.

The second half, the girls knew they’d have to turn up the energy just a little bit more to stay where they could give themselves a chance to win it at the end. They experienced one stretch of about a minute where Wynot made a short run, but that was quickly stopped and Osmond made a run of their own.

Unfortunately, they were not able to get over the hump and had to do some late-game fouling which allowed Wynot to shoot free throws to seal the game. The Lady Tigers fell to Wynot by a score of 48-41.

Osmond was led in scoring by Grace Gansebom (19) and Kiera Moes and Macy Aschoff both with 7. They were led on the boards by Grace Gansebom and Kiera Moes with 7, followed by Bailey Schmit with 5.

Coach David Schmit commented, “This was one of our unwritten goals this year – to take down Wynot. Last year we were right there through one half and things got sideways on us in the second half. That said, we showed how gritty of a team we are and that we have the ability to play with anyone. I know we’ll rebound from this game and look forward to seeing all our hard work and progress result in more wins.”

JV Team Falls

After a delay in games because of the weather, the Lady Tigers took on a top-notch opponent: the Wynot Lady Blue Devils. The Lady Tigers came out ready to play and put forth an outstanding effort on defense.

Their shots, however, seemed to not fall, so Wynot was able to pull ahead and keep the lead throughout the three quarters.

Caydence Krienert and Keli Aschoff both led the team in points with 4 for each of them.

Coach Keri Severson commented, “We definitely put forth a tremendous effort, but without our shots falling and lack of rebounding, it made it a tough game to win. The girls played with great intensity and didn’t let up, but we fell short. The final score was 9-24.”

Creighton 52, Osmond 47 Without much time to think about

Without much time to think about the game before, Osmond took to the court once again on Tuesday, Dec. 14, to battle the Lady Bulldogs from Creighton.

This game took on a totally different feel from the start, with Creighton giving Osmond their first look at a 1-3-1 defense and slowing down their transition game.

The Lady Tigers were not able to execute much of their offense because of some of their own passing mistakes and decision-making.

They were not able to establish much of a rhythm with their gameplan on the offensive or defensive end, which made things somewhat challenging, Coach Schmit said. Creighton did a good job of staying patient and really making Osmond work for everything. The Lady Tigers fell by a score of 52-47.

Osmond was led in points by Cali Gutz (15) and Kiera Moes (9). We were led in rebounds by Grace Gansebom (8) and Kiera Moes (7).

“While we don’t like to make excuses for things, it was really difficult to go into this game without a day to prepare for things that we may see from Creighton,” Schmit said. “They gave us our first look at a 1-3-1 this year and we didn’t execute the way we are capable of. Throughout the game, we were never able to establish momentum and it really took us out of what we like to do. We look to rebound next week on Tuesday the 21st versus a good O’Neill St. Mary’s team before heading into the five-day moratorium.”

Creighton JV Wins

Tuesday evening, the junior varsity girls were back at it, playing the Creighton Lady Bulldogs. The game got off to what seemed like a slow start even though Osmond was ahead in the first quarter.

The second and third quarters were tough since, offensively, Osmond struggled to take care of the ball, find their tempo, and score. With a final score of 13-11, Osmond fell one basket short.

Osmond was led in points by Caydence Krienert with 4, followed by Keli Aschoff, Tessa Gardner, and Erin Wagner with a bucket apiece.

Severson commented: “The girls played with great intensity, but we struggled to execute the ball and pull down rebounds along with getting those shots in the paint to fall. We have some time to work on those skills and make adjustments before our next game on Jan. 4.”
