Lady Bears are off to a great start on the 2020 volleyball season

LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears have shot out of the gate with authority as they are now 4-0 after an impressive start to the season.

Last week, the Lady Bears beat both Ponca 3-1 and Randolph 3-2 in two tough matches.

Randolph and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge went the distance in a wild matchup Thursday, with the host Bears coming away with the five-set win, 29-31, 25-23, 16-25, 25-20, 15-12.

Erica Wolfgram had a big night at the net, finishing with a team-high 16 kills. Kinsey Hall added seven kills, Megan Forsberg put down six, Mollie Schutte had five, Berniece McCorkindale had four and Haley Christensen had three. Hall had 20 assists and Christensen added 14.

LCC had 22 ace serves in the five-set marathon, seven coming from Hall and four each from Christensen and Wolfgram. McCorkindale had three and Forsberg and Paige Cook each had two.

In blocks, Christensen and Mollie Schutte each had three and McCorkindale and Hall both had one. Christensen and Hall each had 15 digs and Jordyn Urwiler and Cassie Granquist had 11 apiece, followed by Wolfgram with eight, Forsberg with seven and Kaylee Donner with five.

On Tuesday, LCC handled Ponca in three sets, winning 25-23, 25-11, 16-25, 25-21.

Wolfgram had 15 kills, McCorkindale added nine, Hall had seven and Schutte and Erica Benson each had six. Hall had 14 assists and Christensen picked up 11.

Benson had four ace serves, Wolfgram added three and Hall had two. Hall led the team in digs with 15, Granquist added 10, McCorkindale had six and Christensen had five. Donner, Urwiler and Wolfgram each had four digs.

LCC played Homer on Tuesday in Laurel. Then the Lady Bears head to the Wakefield Tournament at 4 p.m. Thursday opening with Ponca.

“We know Ponca will be a tough match,” LCC head coach Julie Kvols said. “We also play a strong Lutheran High Northeast team on Thursday and our third game will be an always strong Cedar Catholic program.

“It is going to be a tough weekend and the Bears are going to have be the most focused team and minimize our errors.”
