Junior high girls end season at Wausa, in ‘O’ Club tourney

The Osmond junior high girls’ basketball had a busy week with a game against Wausa, followed by the “O” Club tournament.

Osmond vs. Wausa

The Osmond junior high team took to the road on Tuesday, Feb. 8, for the final time this season to take on the Wausa Vikings. The first matchup with the Vikings this year featured a close, five-point game and Osmond came into this game with a great mindset to get the job done.

The game started out at a breakneck speed with Wausa forcing Osmond into some turnovers which put the Lady Tigers behind quickly. The girls kept playing incredibly hard and getting good shots, but those shots just weren’t falling the way they had hoped them to. The Lady Tigers fell in the “A” game by a score of 35-17.

The “B” game featured a defensive battle full of hustle and tenacity by the Osmond girls. Though they lost the game 4-2, they showed a ton of improvement and grit as they battled a tough Wausa team.

“I’m very proud of their effort today and it’s been fun to see their improvement as the year has gone on,” commented Coach David Schmit.

“O” Club Tournament

The Lady Tigers took on Randolph for the first round of the “O” Club tournament on Saturday, Feb. 12. The game featured a high octane attack of the Tigers on both ends of the floor. The girls played an aggressive man-to-man defense that really had Randolph struggling to get their offense going.

“We were also able to get into transition a lot and that really allowed us to play the way we want to,” Coach Schmit said.

Osmond won the game by a score of 20-6. Scoring for the Lady Tigers were Abby Brown, 8; Erin Aschoff, 4, and Alexa Aschoff, Piper Hoffman and Kaydance Maertins, all with 2. Other contributors for the Lady Tigers were Ava Severson, Rachel Harder, Carriana Kumm, Charley Aschoff, Addison Miller, and Avya Reikofski.

The second game featured a third matchup with Wausa. Osmond’s goal was to play tough man defense and move the ball a lot better than they had the first two matchups in order to keep the pressure on Wausa. Unfortunately, Wausa’s pressure and Osmond’s own turnovers held the Lady Tigers back during the game and they couldn’t break through during the first half.

The second half saw the Lady Tigers really play much better on both ends of the floor with all of the girls giving a great effort and playing more team basketball. Osmond’s second-half efforts were not quite enough as Wausa ended up winning the game 32-15.

Scoring for the Lady Tigers were Kaydance Maertins (6), Abby Brown (4), Ava Reikofski and Alexa Aschoff both with 2, and Carriana Kumm with 1. For their efforts in these two games, the girls earned second-place medals in the “O” Club Tournament.

“This ends our junior high season but the girls showed great improvement throughout the year,” Schmit said. “It was fun to watch their overall performance get better with each game!”
