Junior high are girls steadily improving

OSMOND — The Osmond junior high school girls’ basketball team has been busy the last couple of weeks, and they have been gradually improving. The team played games against Bloomfield, Elgin and Plainview, all solid teams. Despite losing each of the “A” games, the girls continue to grow.

Most recently, the Tigers hosted Plainview and fell 32-20. They were outscored 15-4 in the first quarter, but played evenly with the Pirates throughout the rest of the game.

“Plainview played fast in the first quarter, but our girls played better throughout the rest of the game,” Coach Scott Morrison said.

The Tigers outscored the Pirates 5-4 in the second quarter. This cut the Pirates’ lead down to 19-13. Sophie Gansebom and Erin Wagner each scored a basket. Callie Hoffman hit a free-throw.

The Pirates outscored the Tigers 7-6 in third quarter, building their lead to 26-19. Tessa Gardner scored two points; Wagner added another two, and Belle Vinson added another two points.

In the final quarter, the Tigers were outscored 6-5. Wagner and Caydence Krienert each scored two points, while Vinson hit a free-throw.

The Tigers had eight different girls score. Wagner scored a team-high six points. Vinson scored three points. Anna Kahny and Keli Aschoff each scored two points.

Vinson led the team with 12 rebounds. Gardner had five rebounds; she also had three assists. Krienert and Kahny each had three steals. Julie Kumm had a rebound and a steal. Brianna Kumm had a nice assist. Keely Gubbels came in and played.

The Tigers won the “B” game 4-3. Gansebom scored all four points for the Tigers. Keely Gubbels played well defensively. Jamie Gubbels came on and played solid defense in the middle of the zone.

Many thank yous go to Coach Terry Viterna for taking stats.

“Overall, we are headed in the right direction. It’s been fun to watch the girls’ progress. The more these girls play together, and the more confidence they play with, the better they’re going to get.”

The Tigers continued their season on Saturday at the St. Rose tournament in Crofton. Their first game was a rematch against Wynot.
