Hall has a milestone moment for Lady Bears

LAUREL — It’s scary to think just how good junior Kinsey Hall could end up being as a volleyball setter.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge standout surpassed the 1,000-set milestone last week and with still half of this year and a full 2021 remaining, anything is possible for the Lady Bear.

“We knew this was one of Kinsey’s goals at the beginning of the season,” LCC head coach Julie Kvols said. “She is a very goal-driven kid and knew she would make this easy. Kinsey is one of the hardest workers we have in the gym off season and in season.  She strives for perfection on a daily basis.”

Hall is happy with the accomplishment, but her competitive nature shows itself when talking about it.

“It’s exciting, but I am hoping to get more,” she said. “At the beginning of the year our coaches said to set a goal and that was my goal to reach it at our midpoint and we are there now.

Reaching that goal took a true team effort, she said.

“It’s a shared achievement. I wouldn’t get any of my assists without my hitters and without my passers because I can’t set the ball without passing. I can’t get assists without my hitters hitting the ball,” she said.

Hall also admits she has gotten pretty good off working with the occasional bad pass to still turn it into a potential kill-set.

“I feel I can turn a bad ball into a good set most of the time,” Hall said. “We have five really good, strong hitters and I feel like even if my set isn’t the best thing, they do a good job of turning it into a really good play.”

Hall is quick to confess she is now eyeballing 2,000 assists with still a full season-plus in front of her. She has been setting for the Lady Bears since her freshman year.

Of course it would depend on the kind of offense LCC chooses to run.

“I think it’s totally doable,” Hall said. “We did run a 5-1 last year and a 6-2 this year so I won’t get as many this year. Getting 2,000 is going to be hard. If we run a 5-1 next year it will be doable, but we more than likely will run a 6-2.”

The Lady Bears are now 9-7 overall following a busy week.

LCC fell 3-1 (25-12, 29-27, 23-25, 27-25) to Crofton despite Hall’s achievement during that matchup, bounced back to beat Wakefield 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-16, 25-19), and then went 2-1 at Saturday’s tournament beating Pierce (2-0: 25-17, 25-23) and Homer (2-0: 25-13, 25-23) before losing to Wayne 2-0 (25-13, 25-22).

Against Crofton, the Lady Bears were led by Hall (eight kills, 19 digs, 18 assists) Erica Wolfgram (13 kills, 11 digs), Berniece McCorkindale (10 kills, three aces, 11 digs) Haley Christensen (13 digs, 19 assists) and Jordynn Urwiler (13 digs).
