14-and-under girls play at state

HASTINGS — The 14-and-under girls' softball team played in the Class D state tournament at Hastings July 15-17. The team had a rocky start to the weekend and lost on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. to the Lincoln Sliders 2-14.

The girls came back Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m. to play the Nebraska Edge and lost in a close one, 6-7. We finished the tournament Saturday afternoon against Hebron Heat and lost 10-15.

These girls gave it their all this season and did it all while smiling and having fun. Couldn’t ask for more than that!

18-and-under team places fifth at state

The 18-and-under girls played in the Class D state tournament at Hastings July 15-17. The team had a phenomenal weekend. These girls came from Osmond, Randolph, Plainview, Hartington, Wausa, Neligh, and Norfolk to make up our team. They came together to keep our small town ball alive!

We went into the weekend with a decent record that didn’t show our true potential, and blew it out of the water. These girls started playing like a team and played some great softball.

Several girls pulled out some diving catches: Julie Kumm in center, Callie Hoffman at first, MJ Herrera at second and Sarah Karnes at short stop to name a few!

Our pitchers were lights out the entire weekend. Jessa Backer totaled only three walks and 12 strike outs on the entire weekend. Bailey Schmit totaled zero walks and 30 strike outs on the weekend!

We ended up going 3-3 on the weekend. We made it to “championship Sunday” which is very difficult to do. In my years of playing and coaching, this was a first for me at state! We ended up placing fifth in Class D.

They were a very special group of girls and showed exactly what small town ball is for. They set aside differences, came together and just had fun for the love of the game. I’m very proud to call myself their coach!

On Friday at 3 p.m., we played Bow Spirit from Broken Bow and won 10-5. On Saturday morning at 8 a.m., we played Dmilco and lost 0-14.

On Saturday at 1:15 p.m., we played Highway 91 Cyclones and lost in a heartbreaker, 5-6. On Saturday at 4:45 p.m., we played Sandhills Storm and won 8-5.

On Sunday at 8 a.m., we played Arlington and won in a thriller, 6-5. At the end of the second inning we were down 0-5, and came back and scored all 6 to win the game! Then on Sunday at 9:45 a.m., we played Aftershock and lost 2-8.
